José Álvarez - Hit hard FridayAlvarez allowed four runs on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in one inning in Friday's 7-7 tie with the Rangers.
ImpactA key part of Alvarez's success in his first year with the Giants was his ability to limit home runs -- he allowed two in 64.2 innings. The southpaw pitched to a 5-2 record, 2.37 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 42:19 K:BB and eight holds in his 67 outings last season. Alvarez figures to serve mainly as a middle reliever or opener again in 2022, so he'll likely have limited fantasy appeal outside of formats that count holds given his lack of reliance on strikeouts.

Jarlín García - Settling in for versatile roleGarcia allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout in 1.2 innings versus Texas on Friday.
ImpactGarcia had allowed five runs across his first 1.2 innings in spring training, but he settled down Friday. The southpaw saw a versatile role last year as a multi-inning reliever. He posted a 6-3 record, 2.62 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 68:18 K:BB in 68.2 innings across 58 appearances. He added a save and 11 holds with the occasional look in high-leverage moments. Garcia probably won't factor into the closer conversation much -- Jake McGee, Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval are set to get the save chances early on. Garcia could still be an option if some of those late-inning candidates falter early in the season.

Spencer Howard - Projected No. 5 starterHoward is expected to be the Rangers' No. 5 starter, according to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.
ImpactLandry's projected roster has Howard winning the No. 5 job over A.J. Alexy, Kolby Allard and Glenn Otto. Howard has given up one run on five hits while striking out three over five Cactus League innings (two starts). He's expected to make one more start during spring training. Earlier this spring, manager Chris Woodward told Landry that Howard, Alexy and Otto may benefit from more time at Triple-A but more should be gleaned in the coming days, after which the shape of the rotation should take form.

Kole Calhoun - Scuffles in Cactus LeagueCalhoun started in right field and went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts in Friday's spring training game against the Giants.
ImpactComing off a subpar 2021, the 33-year-old Calhoun has done little to improve his appeal entering 2022. The outfielder has four singles in 19 at-bats. He was limited to just 51 games for the Diamondbacks in 2021 due to a hamstring injury and didn't contribute much when on the field (.670 OPS). Calhoun's slated to start in right field for Texas this season, but the Rangers will keep options open if he repeats last season's performance.

Brad Miller - Swipes two bagsMiller started in left field and went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored in Friday's spring training game against the Giants.
ImpactMiller led off the game with a single then promptly stole two bases and scored on a throwing error. He's not expected to lead off for the Rangers -- that's Marcus Semien's job -- but Miller is expected to be the team's primary left fielder. He's also played some third base this spring, but Andy Ibanez is seen as the primary glove at the hot corner. The 32-year-old Miller has hit safely in all eight Cactus League contests, going 10-for-24 with three home runs, two doubles, six RBI, two stolen bases at six runs scored.

Kolby Allard - Enters after game-openerAllard allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out three over three innings in Friday's spring training game against the Giants.
ImpactAllard entered in the second inning following game-opener Dennis Santana in what was the left-hander's second Cactus League appearance. His first appearance was as a traditional starter, but at this point, Allard is not expected to be part of the rotation that opens the season. He'll stay stretched out and be able to pitch long relief, spot start or deployed as the bulk-innings hurler if the Rangers play around with game-openers in 2022.

Greg Holland - Remains unscored uponHolland struck out two over a scoreless inning in Friday's spring training game against the Giants.
ImpactThis was Holland's fourth scoreless outing in the Cactus League and first appearance since Texas manager Chris Woodward lumped him in with others that could close games in 2022. First, the non-roster invitee needs break camp with the Rangers, and right-handed reliever has pitched well enough. He's allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four over four innings. Woodward also mentioned Spencer Patton and Matt Bush as closer candidates, although Joe Barlow, who saved 11 of 12 chances in 2021, still lurks.
