Injured Jays OF Springer to play in intrasquad game Friday

Blue Jays outfielder George Springer will play in an intrasquad game Friday, the next step on his return from two strained muscles that have delayed his Toronto debut

Transferred to 60-day IL Hatch (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday.

Impact Hatch has been dealing with a right elbow impingement since mid-March but has been throwing bullpen sessions recently. However, the right-hander will now be sidelined until at least June while he continues to recover. Hatch's removal from the 40-man roster will make room for right-hander Jeremy Beasley, who was acquired by Toronto via trade Thursday.

Impact He has been sidelined all season with a right elbow impingement, but it's encouraging to see his throwing program picking up. It remains to be seen if Hatch will be stretched out as a starter or if he will join the big-league bullpen once fully healthy.

Impact The full extent of Hatch's injury still isn't known following his early exit, but he'll undergo an MRI to determine the nature and severity of the issue. A better timetable for the right-hander's return could be revealed once the results of his additional tests are known.

Impact Hatch started Wednesday's Grapefruit League game and allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three over two scoreless innings to begin the contest. However, he pointed at his elbow/forearm area in the top of the third inning and left the game with a trainer. The severity of his injury is unclear, and it's not yet known whether the issue will impact his availability for Opening Day.

Preparing as starter Hatch is viewed as a starter heading into the upcoming season, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.

Impact Hatch was exclusively a starter in the minors but appeared out of the bullpen in 16 of his 17 outings as a rookie last season. His 2.73 ERA in 26.1 innings looked quite strong on the surface, but it seems in large part attributable to an unsustainable .232 BABIP, as it came with a mediocre combination of a 21.1 percent strikeout rate and an 11.9 percent walk rate. It's far from guaranteed that he'll earn a rotation spot to start the season, but it appears as though he'll at least be in the mix.
