Impact The Padres have not yet settled on a backup center fielder, and manager Jayce Tingler mentioned Tuesday that a number of players could get looks at the position during spring training. Pham was among those named as candidates, though the expectation is that the veteran will start either in left field or at designated hitter (if the NL ultimately decides to bring back the DH for a second season). Pham experienced some defensive struggles in the outfield last season, but he does have plenty of experience in center in his big-league career, so he is a feasible -- though unlikely -- option to play the position when Grisham is not in the lineup.

Impact After he was acquired from the Rays last offseason, Pham disappointed during an injury-plagued first season in San Diego, slashing .211/.312/.312. Despite the fact that Pham recently underwent surgery on his left wrist and is due around $8 million in 2021, the Padres apparently aren't deterred from bringing the 32-year-old back for another year. Assuming he makes a full recovery from surgery by the time Opening Day arrives, Pham should slot into an everyday role in left field or at designated hitter.

Recovering from wrist surgery Pham underwent surgery earlier this offseason to correct a problem in his left wrist, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Impact The 32-year-old outfielder has undergone three surgeries since mid-August. The first was to repair a broken hamate bone in his left hand. The second was to treat a stab wound in his lower back. This final procedure, which was previously undisclosed, was to address the worsening of a tear in the cartilage structure on the small finger side of his left wrist. He is lifting weights and running but has yet to resume swinging. However, Pham says his wrist feels much stronger and the grip strength is significantly improved from where it was during the 2020 season. He is projected to make around $8 million in his final arbitration year -- a figure that has led to speculation regarding whether the Padres might non-tender him ahead of Wednesday evening's deadline. He was clearly not at 100 percent last season, when he hit .211 with a .624 OPS, but at his age, it's fair to wonder what level he will rebound to, especially since he has had trouble staying on the field in recent seasons.
