Alex Avila - Runs on fieldAvila (calves) was spotted running on the field prior to Wednesday's win over the Blue Jays, and he could throw to the bases during a workout Friday, the Associated Press reports.
ImpactAvila hasn't played for the Nationals since July 1 due to bilateral calf strains, but the 34-year-old looks like he's starting to ramp up again. Because of the length of his absence, Avila will likely require a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated from the 10-day injured list, and the Nationals may be inclined to wait until rosters expand to 28 men Sept. 1 to bring the veteran backstop back. With the 52-68 Nationals focused on developing younger players at this stage of the season, Tres Barrera and Riley Adams could continue to share most of the work behind the dish even after Avila returns to the mix.

A.J. Cole - Begins rehab assignmentCole (oblique) has been sent to Triple-A Buffalo to begin a rehab assignment, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports.
ImpactCole has been on the injured list since late May due to an oblique strain, but he resumed throwing bullpen sessions in mid-July. The right-hander made two rehab appearances in the lower levels of the minors last week and allowed a run on a hit and a walk while striking out one in two innings. As long as he doesn't experience any setbacks, Cole appears to be on track to return sometime this weekend or early next week.

Teoscar Hernández - Extends homer streakHernandez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double Wednesday in the Blue Jays' 8-5 loss to the Nationals.
ImpactHernandez went yard in his first at-bat of the day in the top of the second inning, extending his home-run streak to four games and bringing his total up to 22 on the season. In spite of Hernandez wielding a hot bat, the Blue Jays have still dropped five of their past six games to plummet to fourth place in the American League East, 10 games behind the division-leading Rays.

ImpactHe took Josiah Gray deep in the third inning before touching up Ryne Harper in the seventh. Semien has gone yard three times in the last three games to give him 29 homers on the year, but he's otherwise cooled down in August, slashing .243/.308/.557 through 18 games.

José Berríos - Settles for no-decision WednesdayBerrios didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to the Nationals, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out thr...
ImpactThe right-hander served up a three-run shot to Juan Soto in the first inning, but he settled down after that and gave the Jays a chance to rally -- which they did in the top of the seventh inning, getting Berrios off the hook for the loss, but Brad Hand promptly gave the game away in the bottom of the frame. Through four starts for Toronto since coming over from Minnesota at the trade deadline, Berrios has a 3.80 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB through 21.1 innings.
