Despite his relative effectiveness, Cahill was limited to 65 pitches, depriving him of the chance to earn a win. With both Drew Smyly (finger) and Jeff Samardzija (shoulder) sidelined, Cahill appears to be locked into the rotation in the short-term. He is projected to draw his next start Sunday against Arizona.

Impact Jeff Samardzija (shoulder) and Drew Smyly (finger) remain without clear timetables to return from the injured list, so Cahill will pick up a second turn through the rotation as the Giants' No. 5 starter. In his 2020 debut last week against the Astros, Cahill walked four batters and needed 55 pitches to record outs, but he left with a no-hitter in play. He'll look to be more efficient and work deeper into Tuesday's start, though Cahill could be capped at somewhere around 70-to-80 pitches as the Giants aim to build up his arm slowly.

Impact While the veteran right-hander was inefficient in his 2020 debut, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Cahill "didn't miss by much often." The Astros just were not chasing and spoiled some decent pitches with 15 foul balls against Cahill. It will be a while yet before Cahill's built up after he missed the start of the season with a fingernail issue. He lines up for a road matchup against the Angels (one of his former teams) early next week.
