Impact Williams actually leads the Cubs in innings pitched to date, as the organization is taking a long look at the veteran. He's mostly been a starter in the majors, but he's competing with Alec Mills and Adbert Alzolay for one of two open rotation spots, so someone could end up getting bumped to the bullpen, though the team could experiment with a six-man rotation as well.

Impact Kyle Hendricks, Jake Arrieta and Zach Davies are expected to lead the Chicago rotation, but beyond that trio, the roles are less clear. Ross said it's too early to say Williams is a full-time starter. Instead, the veteran righty could potentially work in more of a swing role, along with the likes of Adbert Alzolay and Alec Mills, as the team goes from 60 games to 162. "I don't want to put anybody in certain boxes," Ross said. "Let's continue to just see how that pans out and how guys are throwing, because like I've said a number of times, I think it's going to take a number of guys to get through this season." Williams last pitched out of the bullpen back in 2017, when he made 25 starts and six relief appearances.

Impact Williams is seeking to add variation to his slider, shaping the pitch differently based on his matchup. He generated some swings and misses with the new version of the pitch in his spring debut with the Cubs. Impact Williams came into Wednesday's start having given up the most earned runs in the league (37), the most home runs (14) and had lost more games (8) than any other pitcher in baseball. It originally looked like it would be another poor outing for the 28-year-old after giving up a first-inning solo home run to Anthony Rizzo but he settled in afterwards and was able to hold the Cubs' hitters in check for the rest of his outing. 2020 was a season to forget for Williams who finishes with a 6.18 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 49:21 K:BB across 55.1 innings pitched.
