Impact After a 1-2-3 first featuring three strikeouts, the young starter needed 42 pitches to labor through a dreadful second that was punctuated by a Tim Anderson grand slam. The strikeout upside is clearly there, but until McKenzie can limit the walks, he won't be able to work deep into games. None of his five starts so far this season have lasted more than five innings.

Racks up seven strikeouts Saturday McKenzie hurled five innings against Cincinnati on Saturday, giving up one run on five hits and four walks while striking out seven. He did not factor in the decision.

Impact McKenzie was a tad wild in the outing, issuing four free passes over five frames. However, the right-hander did an excellent job controlling the damage, and the only run scored against him came on a Tucker Barnhart solo home run. McKenzie has now issued 10 walks over 12.2 frames, already surpassing the nine walks he yielded across 33.1 innings last season. That said, he has also struck out 18 batters and has a respectable 3.55 ERA. McKenzie's next start is scheduled for Friday at home against the Yankees.

Impact Adam Eaton made McKenzie pay for a couple walks in the third inning, smacking a three-run homer to erase an early Cleveland lead. McKenzie induced nine swinging strikes on 76 pitches in his first start of the season -- the team was able to get away with only four starters for the first couple weeks of the season. McKenzie lines up for another road start this weekend, this time in Cincinnati.

Impact Cleveland was able to get by with a four-man rotation for the first week and a half of the regular season, but with a jam-packed seven-game slate on tap during the upcoming week, the club will break in McKenzie as a fifth starter. As a rookie in 2020, McKenzie made eight appearances (six starts) for Cleveland, posting a 3.24 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 42:9 K:BB in 33.1 innings.

Fantasy managers will want to keep a close eye on how McKenzie is used this year, as he will likely have starts skipped while making the occassional relief appearance throughout the campaign.

Light usage expected early McKenzie won't be asked to start before April 13 and may not be a true starter that day, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Impact Previous reports indicated that McKenzie and Logan Allen had beaten out Cal Quantrill for Cleveland's final two rotation spots, but with three off days in the first eight days of April, the situation will be less than entirely clear at the start of the season. Allen is expected to make his season debut Monday against Kansas City, but McKenzie could be used as an opener in that contest. McKenzie might not even get the April 13 start, as that could go to Quantrill instead or to a combination of the two pitchers. McKenzie should still spend a portion of the season as a true starter, but his early usage may be emblematic of how cautiously he'll be used this season. That caution seems sensible, as McKenzie missed all of 2019 and a fair portion of 2018 with injuries, and he only threw 33.1 innings in last year's shortened season. His workload will undoubtedly be carefully monitored this year.
