Matzek has a 2.08 ERA but a 1.50 WHIP over his last 10 games, posting an 8:8 K:BB through 8.2 innings during that stretch, and his luck may not hold much longer if he doesn't find a little more control.

Impact The southpaw entered the game to begin the eighth inning with the score tied 1-1 and promptly loaded the bases, then had to watch as Nate Jones uncorked a wild pitch to bring around one inherited runner and issued a bases-loaded walk to tack another run onto Matzek's ledger. The runs were the first Matzek has allowed this season, and he still sports a 2.35 ERA and 14:5 K:BB through 7.2 innings with three holds in nine appearances.

Impact Another casualty of the rule putting a runner on second to start extra innings, Matzek suffered the loss despite pitching phenomenally. After yielding a leadoff RBI double, the flame-throwing lefty struck out the next three batters on 12 pitches, only one of which was a ball. Matzek struggled with control in spring training and in his first few regular-season appearances, but he hasn't walked a batter in his last three innings pitched. The veteran's ERA remains at 0.00 through 5.2 early season innings, and he looks capable of replicating his breakout performance from 2020.

Impact The run prevention is nice, but Matzek has had a little trouble getting the ball over the plate consistently, an issue that plagued him in the past prior to his remarkable comeback in 2020. The left-hander has the strikeout stuff to get out of jams and is still expected to fill a high-leverage role in the Atlanta bullpen to begin the season, but if he can't rein in the walks he could slip down the pecking order quickly.
