Tanner Rainey - Takes loss, blows save SundayRainey (0-1) blew the save and took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning in a 5-4 defeat Sunday against the Angels.
ImpactRainey entered the game with a two-run lead and struck out the first batter he faced. After a walk and a single, he punched out Mike Trout. Shohei Ohtani then smacked a two-run double off the wall to tie it and was plated on a walk-off single by Anthony Rendon. Rainey had been excellent in his first eight appearances, converting all three of his save opportunities and holding opponents scoreless. The 29-year-old is the lone National to record a save and his status as closer should not change despite this hiccup.

Patrick Sandoval - Mediocre in no-decisionSandoval allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in 5.2 innings in a 5-4 win Sunday over Washington. He struck out five and did not factor into the decision.
ImpactSandoval pitched fairly well through the first five innings, allowing just one run and pitching around trouble. In the sixth, he allowed three singles and a sacrifice fly before being removed. The lefty has a 1.28 WHIP on the season, identical to his career rate. However, his 2.03 ERA is about half of his career 4.08 ERA, suggesting he may be the beneficiary of some good luck in the first month of the season.
