Carter Kieboom - On bench MondayKieboom is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ImpactKieboom will hit the bench in favor of Ildemaro Vargas after he had started each of the past four games at third base while going 3-for-15 with a home run and a double. Though he's a few years removed from being one of the top prospects in the Washington farm system, Kieboom is still just 25 years old and could get a look as an everyday player in the infield down the stretch while the 61-70 Nationals play out the string.

Riley Adams - Retreats to benchAdams is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ImpactWhile Keibert Ruiz had experienced some lightheadness, Adams started at catcher in each of the last four games, going 1-for-15 with nine strikeouts. Even though the Nationals called up Drew Millas from Triple-A Rochester on Monday to provide extra insurance behind the dish, Ruiz has been cleared to resume catching duties and will step in as Washington's starting backstop in the series opener in Toronto. Adams is expected to see his playing time take a hit moving forward.

Keibert Ruiz - Back in action MondayRuiz (head) will start at catcher and bat cleanup in Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ImpactThough the Nationals called up Drew Millas from Triple-A Rochester to give the team a third catcher on the 26-man active roster, Ruiz will be able to resume duties behind the dish Monday after not starting in either of the past two contests and not catching at all in the previous four contests. Riley Adams will head back to the bench after serving as the Nationals' starting catcher each of the past four games while Ruiz experienced a bout of lightheadness after taking a foul tip to his catcher's mask last Wednesday.

Carl Edwards Jr. - Moved to 60-day ILThe Nationals transferred Edwards (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday.
ImpactEdwards had been on the 15-day IL since June 21, so his move to the 60-day IL won't affect his timeline for a return but will open up a spot on the 40-man roster for catcher Drew Millas, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Rochester. Though Edwards began began a rehab assignment two weeks ago, he made three appearances before suffering a setback with his right shoulder. He's since been diagnosed with a stress fracture, and it's unclear if he'll be able to pitch again at any point in 2023.

ImpactEven though Keibert Ruiz (head) is back in the lineup Monday in Toronto after a four-game absence, the Nationals elected to bring Millas aboard as a third option at catcher behind Ruiz and Riley Adams. The 25-year-old switch hitter has reached the big leagues for the first time in his career, earning the promotion after slashing .291/.390/.442 with seven home runs and six stolen bases across 328 plate appearances between Rochester and Double-A Harrisburg this season.
