Cade Cavalli - Could throw this weekNationals manager Dave Martinez said Monday that Cavalli (elbow) could begin a throwing program this week, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
ImpactCavalli has been focused on rehabbing and strengthening work since undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery in March, but starting a throwing program would represent a major step in his recovery process. If Cavalli is able to play catch before the Nationals close out their regular season, he'll likely gradually increase his throwing distance during the offseason before eventually moving on to mound work. Given the typically timeline for pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery, Cavalli probably won't be available for Grapefruit League action in spring training, but he could face hitters in simulated games before Nationals camp comes to a close. If all continues to go smoothly in his recovery, Cavalli could be ready to make his 2024 big-league debut at some point early next summer.

Jackson Chourio - Elevated to Triple-AThe Brewers promoted Chourio from Double-A Biloxi to Triple-A Nashville on Monday.
ImpactChourio will join Milwaukee's top affiliate after he ended Double-A Biloxi's season on a high note this weekend, recording at least one hit while getting on base at a .375 clip over his final nine starts. Altogether, the 19-year-old outfielder slashed .280/.336/.467 with 22 home runs and 42 stolen bases across 559 plate appearances for Biloxi. He'll join Nashville for the final week of its regular season and will look to build momentum for a spot on the Brewers' 2024 Opening Day roster.

Ildemaro Vargas - On bench SundayVargas is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
ImpactThe Nationals have been running a three-headed timeshare at third base of late, with Vargas, Carter Kieboom and Jake Alu having now made two starts apiece at the position over the past six games. Alu seems to have the most stable playing-time outlook of the three, as he'll now make his third straight start in left field in place of the slumping Travis Blankenhorn. The lack of consistent at-bats for either Vargas or Kieboom makes both players tough to rely upon, even in NL-only leagues.

Travis Blankenhorn - Playing time fadingBlankenhorn is absent from the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox.
ImpactBlankenhorn has now been out of the lineup for four straight contests, with the last three coming against right-handed pitching. Jake Alu is making a third straight start in field field and looks to have emerged as the preferred option there versus righties for Nationals manager Dave Martinez.

Julio Teheran - Waiting in minors for activationTeheran (hip) made the fifth appearance of his rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Nashville, striking out one and working around two hits over two scoreless innings.
ImpactTeheran looks to be fully recovered from the right hip impingement that sent him to the 15-day injured list July 30, as he's already made a pair of five-inning starts for Nashville before being limited to two innings Friday. The Brewers haven't indicated that Teheran's early exit was the result of any setback with his hip; instead, the organization may just be looking to keep the right-hander healthy in case he's needed by the big club over the final two weeks of the regular season. Milwaukee doesn't have an opening in the rotation at the moment, and Teheran lacks the sort of power arsenal to be a difference maker out of the bullpen, so he may have to wait for an injury to one of the Brewers' five starters before he's activated.
