Fires perfect inning Thursday Almonte pitched a perfect fourth inning while failing to strike out any batters in Thursday's spring loss to the Cubs.
Impact Almonte made his second relief appearance of spring training Thursday and only required six pitches to retire the side in the fourth inning. Daniel Bard appears to be the favorite to earn save chances early in the season, but Almonte hopes to be in contention for late-game opportunities in 2021, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. "Any other baseball player would probably say the same thing -- you want to have that big role," Almonte said. "Whether you get it or not, you have to shoot for it. And that's something that I think I can handle." The right-hander has displayed confidence in his fastball, slider and changeup to begin the spring and has allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out one over two scoreless innings during his two relief appearances in Cactus League play.

Notches first save Almonte picked up the save Tuesday against the Giants, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings and allowing one hit. He did not walk or strike out any batters.
Impact Almonte was called upon to relieve ace German Marquez with the tying run at the plate and one out in the eighth inning. He induced a double play to get out of the jam, and Colorado chose to leave him on the mound in the ninth to get three more outs and notch the save. The Rockies' closer situation is hazy with Wade Davis (shoulder) placed on the injured list Sunday, but Almonte doesn't figure to be in line for many more save opportunities. Jairo Diaz sat out Tuesday after registering saves in consecutive opportunities the previous two days, and he figures to be the primary closing option while Davis is out.

Impact Almonte had a subpar season in 2019 in which he posted a 5.56 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 34 innings in the majors as he was shuffled between the big leagues and Triple-A Albuquerque. However, he got off to a strong start in his 2020 season debut as he allowed just one baserunner after relieving Kyle Freeland in the seventh inning. Despite his effective outing Sunday, the right-hander's fantasy value is limited as a middle reliever with inconsistent results in the big leagues.
