Takes loss in season debut Darvish (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Brewers, allowing three earned runs on six hits across four innings. He struck out five and did not issue any walks.
Impact Darvish only threw 73 pitches in the outing, but manager David Ross elected to take it easy on the righty in his first start of the season. It was an uneven performance for Darvish, who struggled early in 2019 before posting a 3.58 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over his final 24 starts. He should be able to increase his pitch count and go deeper into the game his next time out, which is slated for Thursday on the road against the Reds.

Throws Opening Day shutout Hendricks threw a shutout against the Brewers on Opening Day. He allowed three hits, struck out nine and did not issue a walk.
Impact Hendricks did more than enough to justify the Opening Day nod over Yu Darvish with this masterful performance. As noted by Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, Hendricks had 19 swinging strikes Friday, the second-highest single-game total of his career. The changeup had hitters out in front and his command was sharp. Hendricks lines up for a road start in Cincinnati next week before a two-step the week of Aug. 3.

Impact Brett Anderson (blister) will open the year on the injured list, so Burnes takes his spot in the rotation -- he may have made the rotation regardless, but this expedited that announcement. Burnes had electric stuff last year but really struggled with his command and confidence, eventually seeing a sports psychologist in the offseason. Since reporting to camp in February, his stuff has been perhaps even better, touching the high-90s with his fastball while also showing off a devastating low-90s cutter/slider. He will face Yu Darvish in Chicago on Saturday and will then start at home against St. Louis the following weekend.

Impact Because it was a scrimmage, the team had Hendricks record four outs in his sixth inning of work. The righty passed the test and looked comfortable as he got right around 70 pitches for the night. Yu Darvish is the presumptive Opening Day starter, but Hendricks looked sharp in spring training before play was suspended and has continued to pitch well in summer camp. He also happened to outperform Darvish in their head-to-head matchup Tuesday. The team hasn't said anything about who will start Opening Day, but Hendricks has certainly done all he can to earn the assignment.

Impact Probably the most important thing here is that Darvish threw 60 pitches, so he seems to be ramping up well toward the start of the regular season. There are 10 days until Opening Day for the Cubs, so throwing Tuesday puts Darvish in line for that assignment, though Kyle Hendricks also pitched in Tuesday's scrimmage and could get the nod for the opener.
