Requests out of closer role Britton told Yankees manager Aaron Boone following his blown save Thursday against the White Sox that he doesn't "deserve" to pitch in the ninth inning for now, Erik Boland of News... Impact The veteran had been incredibly reliable for the Yankees since joining the team in 2018, but he has struggled greatly this year, posting a 6.19 ERA and 1.81 WHIP through 19 outings. Thursday's blown save was his second across three appearances, which prompted Britton to approach his manager about taking a step back from closer duties in the absence of Aroldis Chapman (elbow). The Yankees did go to Britton in a save situation in the 10th frame Saturday, but the move was almost out of necessity after Jonathan Loaisiga pitched earlier in the contest and Chad Green blew a save chance in the ninth. Britton picked up a hold against the White Sox, but he threw only four of 14 pitches for strikes, walking two batters and giving up one hit while notching only one out. Loaisiga and Green should be considered the favorites for save opportunities in the short term, but the Yankees are hopeful that Chapman has avoided a serious injury, and he could be back as the team's unquestioned closer this week.
