Summoned from minors The Astros recalled Dezenzo from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Impact He's taking the roster spot vacated by fellow rookie Shay Whitcomb, who was sent down. Dezenzo has slashed only .212/.255/.308 with one home run in 17 games with the Astros this season. It's possible he'll get a little playing time versus lefties in the final weekend.

Dispatched to Triple-A Dezenzo was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday.

Impact Dezenzo had a max exit velocity of 109.1 mph and hit a homer in 55 plate appearances with the big club, but he was largely overmatched. The hulking 6-foot-4 corner infielder hit .212 with a 32.7 percent strikeout rate and 5.5 percent walk rate while playing sparingly after an Aug. 6 promotion.

Knocks in two Dezenzo went 1-for-4 with two RBI on Wednesday against the Reds.

Impact Dezenzo drew only his second start against a right-handed pitcher in the team's last seven games. Despite coming through with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning, he's struggled through his first 55 plate appearances in the majors, striking out at a 32.7 percent clip while hitting only .212.

Impact Dezenzo is set for his MLB debut despite having appeared in merely 11 games at Triple-A throughout his career. While he doesn't have much experience above Double-A, Dezenzo has flashed plenty of MLB upside, slashing .391/.472/.739 with four homers across 53 plate appearances for Sugar Land. The 24-year-old figures to provide depth at the corner infield positions and could see some swings from the DH slot.

Starting in Spring Breakout game Dezenzo (wrist) will start at third base and bat eighth Sunday in the Astros' Spring Breakout game against the Cardinals.

Impact Dezenzo hadn't appeared in any Grapefruit League games for the Astros since March 1 while he managed a sore wrist, but his ongoing absence may have been more a byproduct of him not being a realistic candidate to crack Houston's Opening Day roster rather than due to concern about his health. The 23-year-old will be back in action Sunday in a game featuring exclusively prospects and should continue to play in minor-league games on the backfields of camp over the next couple of weeks as he prepares himself for the start of the minor-league season. He'll likely open the 2024 campaign with either Double-A Corpus Christi or Triple-A Sugar Land.

Leveling off at Double-A Dezenzo is slashing .254/.339/.484 with 12 home runs, 16 steals and a 28.9 percent strikeout rate in 55 games for Double-A Corpus Christi.

Impact A 6-foot-4, 220-pound third baseman, Dezenzo's plus power potential is alluring. However, his run earlier this season at High-A Asheville stands out as a pretty clear outlier. He rode a .494 BABIP to a .407/.474/.628 slash line while being old for the level (turned 23 in May) and playing half his games in a very hitter-friendly park. There is still a chance he outgrows third base and never develops a fringe-average hit tool, which would make it difficult for him to get steady playing time for a first-division team like Houston.

Promoted to Double-A Dezenzo has gone 2-for-6 with a pair of walks and two runs scored in his first two games since being promoted from High-A Asheville to Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday.

Impact Dezenzo earned his way to the Texas League after slashing .407/.474/.628 with 16 extra-base hits and six stolen bases in 133 plate appearances for Asheville. The 23-year-old should get the chance to play on an everyday basis in the Corpus Christi middle infield while fellow prospect Will Wagner (wrist) is on the shelf.
