Indy's road course opens to mixed reviews from Cup drivers

NASCAR drivers got their first laps on Indianapolis Motor Speedway's road course in practice — and it opened to mixed reviews

Fast Indy Road Course Practice Truex Jr. was fastest in practice for the Verizon 200 NASCAR Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course Saturday. He turned a fast lap of 89.570 mph.

Impact The Joe Gibbs Racing star posted a lap of the Brickyard road course in the closing minutes that would boost him to the top of the scoring pylon. The late flyer by Truex edged William Byron to lead this lone practice for Sunday's Verizon 200. The driver of the No. 19 Toyota is a strong road racing performer and he should challenge for the win Sunday at the Brickyard.

Third at Watkins Glen Truex Jr. finished third in the Go Bowling at the Glen NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International Sunday afternoon.

Impact It was the best performance in several weeks for Truex and the No. 19 Toyota team. The veteran driver led a race-high 34 laps and took the victory in stage 2. Truex appeared to be set up for the win, but he would lose the lead on pit road during final pit stops to Kyle Larson. Eventually he would fall into the clutches of Chase Elliott and finish the race third. It was his eighth Top-5 finish of the season.

Impact Truex would overcome starting from the rear of the field due to a pre-race inspection failure and turn in a great performance at Atlanta. He would charge through the field and race up to ninth-place by the end of stage 1. From there he'd be a Top 10 driver the rest of the way. The long green-flag run to the finish would see Truex forge a brilliant third-place finish at the checkered flag. it was his seventh Top 5 of the season and first Top 5 since finishing third at Sonoma in early-June.
