Headed to Brooklyn Dragic agreed Monday to a contract with the Nets, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Impact Less than one week after agreeing to a buyout with the Spurs, Dragic is set to reunite with head coach Steve Nash, his teammate with the Suns from the 2008-09 through 2010-11 seasons. The 35-year-old wasn't a part of the rotation in Toronto earlier this season before he left the team in late November, and he was then traded to San Antonio earlier this month. He should have a regular role with Brooklyn's second unit as the team looks to vie for a playoff spot, though Dragic could get a look on the top unit in the short term while Ben Simmons works to regain conditioning and while Kyrie Irving checks in and out of the lineup due to his vaccination status. Though Dragic should have a greater opportunity to earn minutes in Brooklyn than he did earlier in the season in Toronto, he'll likely still struggle to earn enough minutes and usage to attain relevance in most 12-team leagues.

Impact Though the Spurs acquired Dragic from the Raptors on Thursday, San Antonio has no intention of having him play for the team, as the main motivation for taking on his contract in the trade was in picking up a protected future first-round pick. Assuming the Spurs are able to agree to a buyout with Dragic in the coming days, the 33-year-old should settle on his next team at some point during the All-Star break. Given that the Bucks are depleted at guard following the recent trade of Donte DiVincenzo to the Kings as well as injuries to Pat Connaughton (hand) and George Hill (neck), the defending champions can offer Dragic a significant role off the bench with a contending team. Milwaukee won't be alone in its pursuit of Dragic, however, as the veteran guard is expected to command interest from several teams once he reaches free agency.

Impact Though Toronto is characterizing Dragic's absence as "personal leave," his absence since late November is essentially a mutually agreed parting of ways between player and team. The Raptors weren't willing to carve out a regular spot in their rotation for Dragic, but the 35-year-old is expected to have appeal as a backup point guard to plenty of contending clubs as Thursday's trade deadline approaches. Per Doug Smith of the Toronto Star, Dragic is "almost certain" to be dealt ahead of the deadline, with his $19.4 expiring contract perhaps also having some appeal to non-contending clubs looking to free up cap space for 2022-23. Even if a trade doesn't materialize for one reason or another, don't expect Dragic to play for Toronto again, as the the Raptors will likely begin buyout discussions with him if he remains on the roster past the deadline.
