Inks two-way pact with Mavs The Mavericks signed Gortman to a two-way deal Friday, Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com reports.

Impact In a series of related moves, the Mavericks waived A.J. Lawson in order to bring Gortman in on a two-way pact. The 21-year-old impressed in the preseason, during which he averaged 10.3 points while shooting 51.6 percent from the field. The guard is expected to spend the majority of his time with the Mavericks' G League affiliate, the Texas Legends.

Back in bench role Gortman will come off the bench in Thursday's preseason game against the Bucks.

Impact Gortman drew an opportunity to start at point guard in Monday's exhibition against the Clippers, but he'll return to a reserve role as the Mavs will roll out the usual starts Thursday evening.

Impact Gortman put up six points off the bench during Thursday's exhibition, and he'll now get a chance to show what he can do as the team's starting point guard Monday. Gortman has flashed promise so far in the preseason, as he dropped 19 points off the bench in the opener against Memphis.

Impact Gortman led the Mavericks in steals Monday, and he finished the game as the team's second-leading scorer behind Jaden Hardy (21). Gortman signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Dallas in July, and the 21-year-old is attempting to earn a permanent spot on the Mavericks' roster by the end of the preseason.

Impact Gortman spent last season with the Trail Blazers' G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix. While he has yet to make an NBA appearance, Gortman will now have the opportunity to compete for a roster spot in Dallas.
