Shut down by Panthers Peterson rushed seven times for 18 yards while failing to catch his only target during Sunday's 20-0 loss to Carolina.
Impact Returning to the starting role with D'Andre Swift (concussion) out of commission, the 35-year-old Peterson was unable to get anything going against a Panthers defense that previously had been gashed for the 28th-most yards per rush attempt (4.8) and the 29th-most rushing touchdowns (14) in 2020. While the Lions were disadvantaged by also playing without top receiver Kenny Golladay (hip), trusted possession option Danny Amendola (hip) and a hobbled quarterback - Matthew Stafford was toughing out a thumb injury -- it's beyond clear at this point that Peterson simply lacks the burst he once brought to the table. With that said, Detroit has Houston on deck in a Week 12 Thanksgiving Day matchup. If there's ever a setup where Peterson could eat, it's probably a home matchup against a Texans defense allowing a league-high 5.2 yards per carry, but that's only if Swift remains sidelined.

Prepared for start Peterson was told he'd be getting a lot of work again, after D'Andre Swift entered the concussion protocol Thursday, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
Impact With Swift ruled out Friday afternoon, Lions RBs coach Kyle Caskey said Peterson will "lead it off" in Sunday's game against the Panthers, per Chris Burke of The Athletic. Detroit also has Kerryon Johnson on hand, but he's been getting most of his snaps on passing downs, often serving as a blocker. Peterson is the best bet to get the Week 11 start and lead the team in carries, with Johnson and possibly Jonathan Williams likely handling lesser roles. The Lions have another game coming up four days later on Thanksgiving, which could make it difficult for Swift to avoid a second absence.

Season-low four carries Peterson rushed four times for 21 yards during Sunday's 30-27 win over Washington. He also caught his only target for nine yards.
Impact Peterson ceded starting duties to D'Andre Swift and the second-round rookie ultimately handled 21 touches while Peterson and Kerryon Johnson combined for six. It will be interesting to see if Peterson will be more in the mix in Week 11 when Detroit plays a Carolina team that just allowed 192 yards to Tampa Bay's Ronald Jones on Sunday, but it seems like the change in starting duties might be much more than a formality. If this division of work continues, Peterson certainly won't be worth holding onto in any fantasy format out there.

Ceding starting duties to Swift Peterson is expected to work in a backup role during Sunday's game versus Washington with D'Andre Swift set to make his first career start, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Impact Though Peterson has been serving as Detroit's starter through the team's first eight games, he hasn't handled the typical workload normally associated with that role. Peterson has failed to play more than 40 percent of Detroit's offensive snaps in six of those contests, with his usage most frequently taking a hit when the Lions are trailing and forced into pass-heavy game scripts. The fact that Swift is now getting the start ahead of him could signal that Peterson's role as the Lions' top ballcarrier on early downs may be in jeopardy, though Pelissero notes that Detroit is still expected to use a mix of the two and Kerryon Johnson out of the backfield in Week 10.

Impact Peterson was once again out-touched by rookie D'Andre Swift and limited to a largely ineffective performance. His longest gain on the ground went for only eight yards, though he did manage to log a 10-yard reception. Peterson has failed to reach more than 10 carries in each of the past two games and his lack of involvement in the passing game limits his opportunity for more touches. He will taken on Washington, his former team, in Week 10.
