Splitting reps at No. 3 WR Pierce and rookie Adonai Mitchell have rotated playing time between the first- and second-team offenses through the first week of training camp, Indianapolis 93.5 The Fan reports.
Impact Mitchell and Pierce are battling for the No. 3 receiver role in the offense. It's still early in camp, but it's notable that Pierce as the veteran didn't immediately get all the reps with the first unit. Pierce has underwhelmed by averaging just 554 yards and two touchdowns in his two years with the Colts, so there's some risk he could quickly lose playing time to Mitchell, a 2024 second-round pick.

Impact Pierce missed the final day of mandatory minicamp last month, but it was termed precautionary at the time. The third-year wideout is back on the field and was working with the first-team offense alongside Michael Pittman and Josh Downs, notably ahead of rookie Adonai Mitchell. Pierce has also seen reps as a return man with the new kickoff rule going into effect in 2024.

Impact Pierce's big-play ability downfield is nothing new, but as his target count from even this game illustrates, the Indianapolis offense just isn't built to feature regular target opportunities for Pierce. As the fastest Colts wideout it's often Pierce who's stuck with running decoy routes far downfield, which helps buy cover for Michael Pittman and Josh Downs underneath. Usually defenses take appropriate precautions to keep Pierce from getting open downfield, but on his touchdown catch from Sunday the Raiders made the mistake of leaving Pierce alone against the 5-foot-8 Amik Robertson, who had no means of defense against the 6-foot-3 Pierce. Until the Colts feature Pierce on a wider variety of routes, his game will likely remain boom-or-bust for fantasy purposes.
