Panthers DT Derrick Brown sidelined with season-ending knee injury

Panthers star DT Derrick Brown is headed to season-ending IR due to a knee injury he suffered in Week 1.

Goes on IR Carolina placed Brown (knee) on injured reserve Tuesday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

Impact Brown tallied three tackles and played 60 of the Panthers' 66 defensive snaps in Sunday's 47-10 loss to the Saints in Week 1 but emerged from the contest with a meniscus injury. He's expected to undergo a procedure to address the injury, but a recovery timeline won't be established until doctors determine whether he requires a partial meniscectomy or a full repair of the meniscus. The latter surgery would spell an end to Brown's season, while a partial meniscectomy requires a shorter recovery timeline. The move to IR at least ensures that Brown won't play in any of the Panthers' next four games, making a Week 6 matchup with the Falcons on Oct. 13 his earliest possible return date.

Impact Brown's injury is among the worst pieces of news the Panthers could receive after the Week 1 rout. Following the offseason departure of Brian Burns, no player is more invaluable to Carolina's defensive front than Brown, who inked a four-year, $96 million contract extension with the team this offseason. Pelissero reports that Brown will require knee surgery to address the severity of his meniscus issue, after which a full recovery timetable will be discerned. It sounds like only a matter of time before the Panthers rule Brown out versus the Chargers in Week 2, though, which could thrust Jayden Peevy and LaBryan Ray into expanded roles.

Impact Brown also intercepted the first pass of his career, an added bonus to his most productive tackling campaign thus far. Since being drafted seventh overall in 2020, Brown has struggled getting to the passer consistently, but he at least elevated his performance elsewhere this season. Depending on whether the Panthers pick up his fifth-year option or not, 2023 could be Brown's final under contact in Carolina.
