Impact Hilliard logged the first carry of the night for the Titans but saw minimal action. The 27-year-old is seemingly firmly entrenched as Derrick Henry's primary backup, so it wasn't surprising that head coach Mike Vrabel opted to give the bulk of the work in the ground game to Hassan Haskins and Julius Chestnut, who seem to be battling it out for the third running back job. Hilliard may not be due for much action in the Titans' preseason finale against the Cardinals at home next Saturday night.

Cements role with strong practice Hilliard stood out in Thursday's joint practice with the Buccaneers, scoring three touchdowns, Paul Kuharsky of USA Today Titans Wire reports.

Impact Two of Hilliard's three touchdowns were thrown by starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, as Hilliard showcased the pass-catching skills that have him favored to work as Tennessee's third-down back this season. Kuharsky adds that Hilliard "has left no doubt" that he'll open the season as the team's top third-down option in the backfield, though he's unlikely to play much on early downs outside of hurry-up situations as long as workhorse Derrick Henry's healthy.

He caught a pair of touchdown passes from Ryan Tannehill during a minicamp practice Thursday, which is notable given Henry's lack of involvement in the passing game. Hilliard was also impressive in his limited opportunity in 2021, highlighted by a 131-yard effort on the ground against the Patriots in Week 12. His familiarity with the offense could be another reason he has the advantage over Haskins for the second spot on the running back depth chart -- at least initially.
