Practicing with starters Haskins was first through the rotation in each set of drills at Tuesday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Alex Smith was the second QB up in 7-on-7 drills, while Kyle Allen got that honor in 11-on-11s (Smith hasn't been cleared for full-team work). Coach Ron Rivera is allowing each quarterback to make his case for the Week 1 job, but there's no question about Haskins being the favorite. Rivera said Haskins would've been his starter for the preseason opener if the NFL hadn't cancelled the exhibition slate this year.

Impact Rivera said it would've been Haskins in the preseason opener, followed by Allen in the second game. Of course, there's no exhibition schedule in 2020, with teams instead jumping right from practice to the regular season. It's been hypothesized that the situation favors Allen and his familiarity with OC Scott Turner, but it's Haskins who offers real upside to develop into a long-term starter. Then there's the matter of Alex Smith, who was activated from the PUP list Sunday and could eventually emerge as an option to take snaps under center. Whoever gets the Week 1 start -- Haskins is the favorite -- will undoubtedly be looking over his shoulder if he struggles early in the season.

Impact Allen spent the past two seasons in Carolina working with Rivera and quarterbacks coach Scott Turner, who now serves as offensive coordinator in Washington. The unusual circumstances of 2020 present Haskins with the added challenge of a shortened offseason and no preseason games, but he said the reads and concepts in Turner's offense are the same as what he learned from Jay Gruden last year, only with simpler terminology now that the team isn't using a West Coast system. Rivera hinted at a potential competition for the starting job back in March, so Washington beat reporters are sure to keep a close eye on the division of reps between Haskins and Allen once the team starts practicing in earnest later this month. Rivera did say he expects Haskins to be the starter, and the 23-year-old's status as a recent first-round pick should tilt any competition in his favor if the team thinks it's a close call.

Impact Smith was medically cleared by Washington's surgical staff early last week, but his subsequent placement on the PUP list meant he can't practice. No matter, he clearly has been able to get in some on-field work as he continues his recovery from a gruesome leg injury and ensuing bouts with infection. There's no telling when (or if) Smith will make it all the way back, but he seems to be putting himself in a position to return to the regular-season roster.
