Set to reprise starting job The Panthers waived undrafted free agent Harrison Mevis on Sunday, leaving Pineiro as the only kicker on the team's roster, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Impact While Pineiro was not really expected to lose his job to Mevis this offseason, the latter's departure should clear up any questions about this position for Carolina heading into the regular season. The veteran missed the final two games of the 2023 campaign with a hamstring injury, but he performed well over his 15 regular-season appearances, converting 25 of 29 field-goal attempts and 17 of 20 PATs. Pineiro is entering the final season of a two-year, $4.1 million deal with the Panthers.

Impact Pineiro missed Carolina's last two games with a hamstring injury. Despite the Panthers' abysmal offense often restricting his scoring opportunities, Pineiro still clinched both of the team's victories with field goals as time expired. Although there is a potential out in Pineiro's contract for a new front office to evaluate this offseason, the veteran is currently slated to return to Carolina for the 2024 campaign.

Impact An active Pineiro didn't fulfill his typical placekicking duties for the Panthers last Sunday at Jacksonville after hurting his hamstring in pregame warmups. The injury kept him out of all drills during Week 18 prep, and an ensuing doubtful designation unsurprisingly led to inactive status this Sunday. Pineiro thus will yield his gig to Matthew Wright in the season finale.

Impact Pineiro didn't see the field in this past Sunday's loss to the Jaguars after experiencing hamstring tightness in warm-ups, and the injury continues to bother him as the Panthers prepare to host the Buccaneers in Sunday's season finale. Carolina signed Matthew Wright to the practice squad as insurance Tuesday, so Wright would handle kicking duties if Pineiro's unable to play.

Impact Pineiro was active for the contest, but after suffering the pregame injury, Carolina deemed him questionable to be available, according to Kaye. Linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill handled the opening kickoff in Pineiro's stead, and Carolina then bypassed a field-goal attempt on 4th-and-7 at the Jacksonville 21-yard line in pursuit of an unsuccessful first down. Carolina ultimately went three-and-out on its ensuing six possessions and fell into a 19-0 hole, after which attempting field goals became a moot point. Pineiro will presumably be sent in for further evaluation in the coming days, and if there's any concern he won't be available for the Week 18 finale versus the Buccaneers, Carolina will presumably add another kicker to its 53-man roster or practice squad.

Sticks with Panthers Pineiro re-signed with Panthers on a two-year contract Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Impact It had been several seasons since Pineiro was a full-time kicker in the NFL, but he had a successful 2022 campaign with the Panthers while making 33 of his 35 field-goal attempts. In particular, he showed excellent accuracy from long range by making 15 of his 16 kicks from more than 40 yards away. He was rewarded with a two-year deal and should be locked into the starting role in Carolina for the foreseeable future.
