AP source: Minshew has thumb injury that could force QB swap

A person familiar with the situation says Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew has a strained ligament and multiple fractures in his right thumb

Dealing with thumb injury Minshew underwent X-rays on his right thumb earlier this week that revealed multiple fractures and a sprained ligament, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Impact According to the report, Minshew has been dealing with discomfort in his thumb since Oct. 11 against the Texans, but the Jaguars didn't know about the injury until this week. Minshew will have a Week 8 bye to aid his recovery, but Schefter notes that the Jaguars aren't certain Minshew will be available for the team's Week 9 rematch with the Texans on Nov. 8. Next up on the depth chart at quarterback are Mike Glennon and Jake Luton.

Has so-so showing Sunday Minshew completed 14 of 27 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns while rushing four times for 21 yards during Sunday's 39-29 road defeat to the Chargers.

Impact Prior to the game, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Minshew's job security was thinning, and he didn't exactly help his cause with this Week 7 performance. While he tossed multiple touchdowns for the fifth time and avoided throwing a pick for the third occasion in seven games, he matched his season low in passing yards, and his 51.9 completion percentage stands alone as his worst in a single contest on the campaign. The Jaguars have a bye week on tap, so coach Doug Marrone will have time to evaluate Minshew before making a decision on a Week 9 starter under center. Behind Minshew, Mike Glennon and rookie sixth-rounder Jake Luton are the next players up at quarterback in Jacksonville.

At the very least, Minshew will likely need to keep the offense running smoothly through the first three quarters, which has largely been a challenge this season. During the five-game slide, Minshew has completed 65 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns and 6.9 yards per attempt, but he's put up a fair amount of his production in garbage time and has turned the ball over eight times (five interceptions, three lost fumbles).

His first score came on the ground when he scrambled out of the pocket and evaded a defender for a six-yard rushing touchdown. With five minutes remaining in the game, he tallied his second touchdown on a swing pass to James Robinson from 14 yards away. For the season, Minshew has now recorded multiple touchdowns in five of his six starts. Volume has also been on his side, as he's attempted at least 40 passes in each of his last five games.
