Tabbed as preseason starter Smith will start Seattle's preseason opener Saturday against Pittsburgh, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Impact Drew Lock reportedly outplayed Smith by a wide margin in Seattle's mock game Tuesday, but it won't be enough to flip the depth chart, at least not yet. Smith has taken most of the first-team reps this summer, after completing 65 of 95 passes for 702 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in four games last season. The numbers are impressive at first glance, but Smith also took 13 sacks for 117 yards and added only 42 yards rushing. No qualified passer had a sack rate worse than 11.8 percent (Justin Fields) in 2021, while Smith was at 12 percent over the limited sample.

Impact Smith started the Seahawks' team scrimmage last Saturday, and the first depth chart of the preseason seems to reflect that he remains ahead of Drew Lock in the quarterback competition. During last week's scrimmage, Lock helmed the second-team offense. Seattle's preseason opener, Aug. 13 in Pittsburgh, will serve as the first of three upcoming contests to help fully settle the competition between Smith and Lock ahead of Week 1.

Struggles in team scrimmage Smith completed 10 of 19 passes for 94 yards (4.9 YPA) in Saturday's team scrimmage, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.

Impact Smith played nearly the entire game with the first-team offense against the second-team defense. Meanwhile, Drew Lock operated with the second-team offense and played against the first-team defense, and he managed to complete 18 of 27 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. Head coach Pete Carroll mostly avoided making any judgements about the quarterback competition in his press conference, but Lock clearly outperformed Smith on Saturday, even if the former's stat line was merely mediocre. There are still three preseason games to settle the competition, the first of which is Saturday, Aug. 13 against the Steelers.
