Three catches in preseason opener Ferguson brought in all three targets for 29 yards in the Cowboys' 17-7 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.
Impact The rookie fourth-round pick co-led the team in receptions while checking in second in receiving yards for the night, making it a solid debut. Ferguson would appear to have a good chance of locking down the No. 2 tight end role behind Dalton Schultz if he can produce in similar fashion during the Cowboys' remaining pair of preseason games.

Back at practice Ferguson returned to practice Monday after picking up a hamstring issue last Tuesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Ferguson looked strong in his return to the field and stood out for his blocking Monday, according to Archer. The four-year collegiate starter out of Wisconsin should have ample experience as a run blocker, and this trait could give him an advantage in the competition for the Cowboys' No. 2 tight end spot behind Dalton Schultz. Should he remain active, it will be worth monitoring how many snaps Ferguson potentially sees ahead of fellow tight ends Sean McKeon and Jeremy Sprinkle during Dallas' first preseason game Saturday at Denver.

Dealing with hamstring injury Ferguson (hamstring) picked up a hamstring issue during Tuesday's practice, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact The seriousness of Ferguson's injury has yet to be revealed, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Dallas take extra precaution with their rookie tight end, especially when dealing with a hamstring problem. The Wisconsin product was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft after securing first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2021, where he recorded 46 receptions, 450 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games played, all while in a run-heavy offense. Once Ferguson is cleared to play, he'll compete with Sean McKeon and Jeremy Sprinkle (Achilles) for the No. 2 tight end spot behind Dalton Schultz.

Impact Ferguson was immediately productive as a redshirt freshman at Wisconsin, as he recorded 36 receptions for 456 yards and four touchdowns in a run-heavy offense. However, he plateaued and never posted more receiving yards in a season than he did as a freshman. Ferguson measured in at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds and ran a 4.81 40-yard dash, but he showed impressive short-area athleticism with his three-cone drill and broad jump. He'll aim to secure the No. 2 tight end role behind Dalton Schultz in Dallas.
