Two grabs in preseason opener Tolbert brought in two of seven targets for 10 yards in the Cowboys' 17-7 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.

Impact Tolbert was the target on Cooper Rush's first two pass attempts, neither which was caught. The rookie did draw a pass interference penalty on the first play of the Cowboys' third drive and subsequently got on the board with a pair of receptions, making it a busy yet modest night for the third-round pick. Tolbert's next opportunity to ramp up for what should be a solid role right from the start of his career comes in a road battle against the Chargers next Saturday night.

Impact The third-round rookie out of South Alabama already appeared to be one of the favorites for a Week 1 starting spot opposite CeeDee Lamb heading into training camp, but James Washington's foot injury removes Tolbert's top competition from the equation. Team owner Jerry Jones also indicated in the wake of Washington's injury that the team wouldn't rush out and sign a veteran wideout to replace him, although the Cowboys could change direction after seeing how depth wideout options like Noah Brown and undrafted rookie Dennis Houston look in the preseason. Eventually, Washington and Michael Gallup (knee) will both be back in the mix, so Tolbert will need to have a quick start to the season to maintain his snaps and targets.

Impact In particular, the duo connected on a sideline pass in traffic during a two-minute drill. Tolbert has a golden opportunity ahead of him for a significant role in the Cowboys' passing game with Amari Cooper in Cleveland and Michael Gallup (knee) not guaranteed to be ready for Week 1, but the third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft will need to prove in camp he's ready for it.

Impact Top tight end Dalton Schultz was part of the group, as were CeeDee Lamb and Ezekiel Elliott. Tolbert also saw reps with the first-team offense at the end of minicamp, and with Michael Gallup not expected to be healthy for the beginning of the season, the third-round rookie could find himself in the starting lineup in Week 1, lining up either opposite Lamb on the outside or working out of the slot. An impressive performance in training camp would help solidify Tolbert's spot and convince the Cowboys they don't need to bring in additional veteran depth at wide receiver.
