The 24-year-old running back's last regular-season action came in 2022 with the Commanders, when he appeared in three games and recorded 78 rushing yards on 17 attempts.

Los Angeles' offense as a whole struggled to move the ball, especially in the first 30 minutes of the game, as Patterson's long of 16 yards came near the end of the first half with Seattle playing a prevent defense of sorts, content to let the Chargers effectively run out the clock. Neither Elijah Dotson (three carries, seven yards) or Isaiah Spiller (five carries, five yards) did much with their limited opportunities on the ground and it's also worth noting intriguing rookie Kimani Vidal also was held out of the exhibition, which appeared to be a coach's decision.

Impact With Gus Edward (undisclosed) limited to individual drills and sixth-round pick Kimani Vidal working with the backups, J.K. Dobbins and Patterson seem to be getting most of the first-team RB snaps early in training camp. Patterson nonetheless seems more likely to find himself on the roster bubble than competing for a significant Week 1 role, considering he went undrafted back in 2021 and didn't make a regular-season appearance last year. He spent most of 2022 on the Commanders' practice squad and most of 2023 on the Chargers' practice squad.

Impact Brian Robinson (knee) was inactive for the Commanders' season finale, so Patterson found himself as the primary option in the team's backfield after not getting a touch through the first 17 weeks, and he used the opportunity to establish a new career high in rushing yards for the game. Robinson's strong second half all but ensures he'll be the team's top RB in 2023, but if Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) gets moved in the offseason, Patterson could enter next season in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, giving the 2021 undrafted free agent some possible deep-league fantasy intrigue.

Impact The other is journeyman Jonathan Williams, who was the No. 3 back behind Brian Robinson (knee) and Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) for most of December. With Gibson missing the final two games of the season and Robinson out for the last game, Patterson has been called up from the practice squad the past two weeks for the first time since mid-November. The 2021 undrafted free agent is thus in line to get his first touches since Week 17 of last season, when he replaced an injured Gibson and tallied 98 total yards (plus a touchdown) as the starting running back. The Commanders also have Reggie Bonnafon as an option at running back after signing him to the practice squad Thursday.

Impact With fellow running backs Antonio Gibson (knee) and J.D. McKissic (neck) both on injured reserve, along with Brian Robinson currently listed as questionable due to a knee issue, Patterson could find himself working in a backfield committee alongside Jonathan Williams this weekend versus Dallas, given Robinson is eventually sidelined.
