Will miss entire rookie season Coach Kevin O'Connell announced Wednesday that McCarthy (knee) has undergone season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Impact The Vikings announced Tuesday that McCarthy would require knee surgery, but at that time there seemed to be optimism that the No. 10 overall pick might only need his meniscus trimmed, an operation would have allowed him to return in 2024. Instead, Minnesota is proceeding with the option that best positions McCarthy for a successful long-term career, at the cost of missing his entire rookie campaign. The development leaves Sam Darnold in position to start Week 1 under center for the Vikings, and potentially to keep a grip on that position for the entire 2024 season. The team also figures to explore adding further depth behind Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall.
