Picks up quad injury Fortson left Saturday's training camp practice early due to a quadriceps injury, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.

Impact More details about Fortson's injury will reportedly be made available Monday. The 26-year-old was reportedly making plays early on in camp and inching toward securing the No. 2 tight end gig behind Travis Kelce, but it now remains to be seen if he'll have to miss significant time. Fortson tore his Achilles last October, but he has since gained clearance to participate in on-field activities.

Making plays in camp Forston reeled in six of his seven targets during training camp Friday, including an impressive catch against cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.

Impact Per Sweeney, Fortson is seemingly making the strongest case to be the team's No. 2 tight end early in camp. The Chiefs also have Blake Bell and spent a fifth-round pick on Noah Gray last season with the hope Gray could develop into the future of the position, but neither should be considered a lock for the spot. Regardless of Forston's standing on the depth chart as the preseason wears on, the obvious hurdle to fantasy value is Travis Kelce ranking above him, in addition to the team's new weapons out wide and in the backfield. However, Fortson could position himself to take over as the primary tight end in the event Kelce misses time.

Playing 7-on-7 at minicamp Fortson (Achilles) participated in 7-on-7 drills during the Chiefs' minicamp, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.

Impact Fortson tore his Achilles in October last year and was sidelined for the remainder of the 2021 season. He was limited throughout OTAs, but his participation in minicamp is an extremely encouraging sign for his availability heading into the 2022 campaign. The undrafted tight end out of Valdosta State caught five passes for 47 yards and two scores across six games during his rookie season, and if he's available to start the upcoming season, he'll compete with Blake Bell and Noah Gray for snaps behind Travis Kelce.

Impact Fortson's participation in the Chiefs' OTAs is particularly encouraging after he was already seen doing individual drills with his personal trainer Wednesday. The second-year tight end is returning from a season-ending injury torn Achilles in October of 2021 and was also seen wearing a full-length compression sleeve Thursday. There's no guarantee that Fortson will be a participant in Phase 3 of Kansas City's upcoming voluntary workouts according to Charles Goldman of USA Today, but the tight end's continued progress is an encouraging sign for his availability for the start of the regular season.
