Backing up Garrett Gilbert Washington elevated Shurmur from its practice squad ahead of Tuesday's game against the Eagles. Impact Shurmur has yet to take his first NFL regular-season snaps, but he'll at least dress as the Football Team's backup quarterback for the Week 15 contest after neither Taylor Heinicke (illness) nor Kyle Allen (illness) were cleared to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday. Though Shurmur has been in the Washington organization since September, the Football Team will turn to the more experienced Garrett Gilbert to make the spot start in place of Heinicke, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. Gilbert was just signed off the Patriots' practice squad Friday, so if he struggles early on against the Eagles, Washington could be compelled to give him the quick hook in favor of Shurmur.
