Impact Murray paced the Denver backfield with nine carries despite Melvin Gordon drawing the start and working the first few offensive possessions. Neither back was particularly efficient on the ground, though Gordon managed a superior performance as a pass catcher. While both Gordon and Murray split the work fairly evenly out of Denver's backfield, it's unclear whether the team may plan to mix Chase Edmonds in more regularly as he grows more familiar with the offense.

Impact Denver and Miami executed a blockbuster deal ahead of the trade deadline, with Edmonds, a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick going to the Broncos in exchange for outside linebacker Bradley Chubb and a 2025 fifth-round selection. Edmonds had been in the midst of a disappointing first season in Miami and was struggling to find playing time behind Raheem Mostert, but the duo of Murray and Gordon likely represents less imposing competition for snaps and touches. The two had essentially split the work the past two weeks, with Murray carrying 22 times for 70 yards (3.2 YPC) and two touchdowns to go with three receptions for 12 yards over that stretch. Gordon, meanwhile, held the edge in playing time with 53.6 percent of the snaps, but he struggled to a 3.1 yards-per-carry average on 20 totes. Given that the Broncos aren't tied to either Murray or Gordon beyond 2022, the coaching staff could opt to give Edmonds a look in a three-down role if he quickly establishes himself as a superior option to either back. At least initially coming out of the Broncos' Week 9 week, Edmonds may be part of a three-headed timeshare in the backfield that would limit the fantasy upside of Edmonds, Murray and Gordon.

Impact Murray's usage continues to fluctuate, as he led Denver's backfield with 14 carries as opposed to Melvin Gordon's nine. Murray wasn't all that effective -- he averaged only 3.3 yards per carry -- but he managed a game-winning plunge into the end zone from two yards away late in the fourth quarter. Through three games with the Broncos, Murray has reached double-digit carries on two occasions, and he has also scored a touchdown in consecutive contests.

Impact Murray took a backseat to fellow running back Melvin Gordon in Week 7, playing 31 of the Broncos' 79 offensive snaps while Gordon was in on 40 snaps. With that said, the veteran accounted for Denver's only touchdown in the contest. Murray's decline in usage seemed inevitable after head coach Nathaniel Hackett said Melvin Gordon would start while Murray would have a role off the bench after the Broncos' barely used Gordon in Week 6. Though it's difficult to predict how what the backfield split will look like going forward, it's important to note that fellow back Mike Boone was placed on injured reserve Monday after suffering an ankle injury Sunday. This should open up opportunities for both Murray and Gordon. The 32-year-old will look to improve upon his performance with a Week 8 matchup against the Jaguars.
