Impact Thomas had knee surgery Dec. 17 to address an ACL tear accompanied by MCL and meniscus damage. He resumed jogging in April, but it remains to be seen when he'll be able to practice fully and as a result it won't be any surprise if John Bates is the Week 1 starting tight end for Washington.

Impact Thomas had major knee surgery Dec. 17 and resumed jogging at some point in April. He didn't participate in offseason practices and won't be ready for the start of camp, with Week 1 also a major question mark given the tight end's revelation in April that he'd damaged his MCL and meniscus in addition to an ACL tear. John Bates is the favorite to start at tight end in the event Thomas isn't ready for the opener, and they could form a timeshare if/when they're both healthy.

Impact Thomas said "rehab is going very well" from his Dec. 17 surgery, and noted that his recovery is already "at the jogging stage." While it's positive that the starting tight end is currently "a little" ahead of schedule in his recovery, Thomas also revealed that his surgery was more extensive than previously disclosed. "I did ACL, MCL and both of my meniscus," Thomas said of the procedure. The severity and timing of Thomas' injury makes his status for Week 1 uncertain, so second-year pro John Bates is a candidate to handle increased work during the early stretch of the 2022 campaign.

Impact Washington initially feared Thomas had suffered an ACL tear, but follow-up testing led the team to be optimistic the structural damage in the tight end's knee had not impacted his ACL. However, after he had already been placed on season-ending IR, further testing has now confirmed the severity of Thomas' injury, for which he's expected to undergo surgery shortly. As a result Thomas, who recently signed a three-year, $24 million extension, faces a more arduous recovery timeframe and may not be back to 100 percent form by the start of the 2022 season. For the remainder of the 2021 campaign, Ricky Seals-Jones will continue to operate as Washington's top tight end.

Officially on IR Washington placed Thomas (knee) on injured reserve Wednesday, ruling him out for the rest of the 2021 season.
Impact Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reported Monday that Thomas' initial MRI revealed that he avoided an ACL tear of his left knee, and while that hasn't been confirmed one way or the other, the tight end is evidently dealing with a serious enough health concern that he'll be done for the season after landing on IR for a second time. While Thomas was on IR earlier this season due to a strained hamstring, Ricky Seals-Jones averaged four catches for 38.4 yards and 0.2 touchdowns on six targets across five starts (Weeks 5 through 10). However, Seals-Jones then missed Weeks 11 through 13 with a hip injury, allowing rookie John Bates to get more playing time. It isn't entirely clear Seals-Jones will return to a three-down role if he's available for this week's game against Dallas, but he offers more promise than Bates as a pass catcher.
