AP sources: Saints negotiating with Texans for Mark Ingram

Two people familiar with the situation say the Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints were working toward a trade that would send veteran running back Mark Ingram to the Saints

Headed back to New Orleans The Texans are slated to trade Ingram to the Saints, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Impact Ingram, who had been leading a committee backfield in Houston along with David Johnson and Phillip Lindsay, is now slated to work behind the Saints' undisputed top back, Alvin Kamara. While it's a good fit in real terms, given Ingram's previous tenure with New Orleans and the team's need for depth behind Kamara, Ingram's fantasy value likely takes a hit with the move, while both Johnson and Lindsay figure to see an uptick in touches.

Sees nine touches in loss Ingram had six carries for nine yards and caught all three of his targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 31-5 loss to Arizona.

Impact The Texans grabbed a 5-0 lead early in the second quarter on the backs of Houston's defense, which produced a safety then a short field that turned into a 53-yard Ka'imi Fairbairn field goal. Until that point, Ingram and the Texans' running game did little and finished with 42 yards and a 2.8 yards-per-attempt average. The Cardinals' offense eventually found itself and scored on four consecutive drives and Houston shelved its running game. Ingram leads the team's backs in carries but has not found the end zone since Week 1.

Impact Ingram continues to see plenty of volume, having handled at least 14 carries in four of Houston's first six games. Despite the heavy workload, he hasn't found the end zone since Week 1, and Ingram's 4.1 yards per carry in this one actually marked a season high. Ingram will try to end his touchdown drought in Week 7 against the Cardinals.

Impact Ingram's rushing yardage tally did pace the Texans on the night, but given how lackluster a game it was for the ground attack, that's faint praise. The veteran would appear to have clear possession of the lead-back role at the moment -- Phillip Lindsay logged one more carry Thursday yet averaged under 1.0 yard per tote -- but he could certainly find running room at a premium again in a Week 4 road matchup against the Bills on Sunday, Oct. 3 due to rookie quarterback Davis Mills not presenting himself as an imposing threat to a talented Buffalo defense.

When Mills was on the field, Houston's ground game came to a halt, with the team gaining just 27 yards on 14 carries. As the NFL can be a copycat league, expect Ingram and fellow backs Phillip Lindsay, David Johnson and Rex Burkhead to get little room to operate against Carolina.

Impact While a Texans backfield that features three accomplished veteran backs rightfully gives fantasy managers jitters, Ingram has worked as the clear lead back over the first two games of the season. Whether that holds remains to be seen, but Ingram did outpace David Johnson and Phillip Lindsay by eight and nine carries, respectively, against Cleveland, albeit with not much production to show for it. It will be interesting to see if the workload among the trio is more evenly distributed with the quick four-day turnaround for a Week 3 interleague matchup against the Panthers.
