Impact Brissett played two more snaps -- and threw a pair of accurate passes -- after hurting his throwing shoulder when a defender landed on top of him during a sack on the sixth play of the game. Drake Maye came in for the next drive, which Mayo said was the plan beforehand anyway. The rookie then completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a TD, adding three carries for 17 yards while leading New England to seven points and a missed field goal across five drives. Mayo acknowledged Monday that Maye outplayed Brissett the past few weeks, but the coach also hinted at some hesitancy to start the rookie Week 1, saying "we've all seen the horror stories of rookie QBs getting thrown to the wolves," per Chad Graff of The Athletic. The Patriots likely will name a starter at some point this week.

K.J. Osborn - Plays as starter again Osborn recorded two receptions on four targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders.
Impact Osborn was a starting outside receiver alongside Tyquan Thornton and was second on the team with 21 snaps on the first 31 offensive plays. He was targeted deep regularly, and he did connect with Drake Maye on a 48-yard catch -- only for it to be nullified by a penalty. The Patriots appear set to rotate their wide receiver corps early in the season, and Osborn is in the group that should see the field plenty in Week 1 against Cincinnati.

Tyquan Thornton - Starts preseason finale Thornton recorded one catch on three targets for four yards in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders.
Impact Thornton paired with K.J. Osborn as a starting outside receiver, and he entered the game ahead of the likes of Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker. That may not remain the case in Week 1 against Cincinnati, but New England looks poised to rotate its receiving corps, so Thornton should see the field plenty even if he isn't the first on the field.

Ja'Lynn Polk - Makes highlight play with Maye Polk recorded two receptions on three targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders.
Impact Polk wasn't on the field for the Patriots' first drive, instead usurped by K.J. Osborn and Tyquan Thornton as the starting outside wide receivers. However, Polk was on the field for the team's second possession paired with Drake Maye, and he hauled in a strike across the middle that he turned upfield for a 29-yard gain. He also had a nice catch on an out route that would have gone for another first down, though the gain was offset by a penalty. Polk had been working with the starting unit in practice leading up to the game, so even if he isn't formally listed as a starter he should still see the field plenty in Week 1 against Cincinnati.

DeMario Douglas - Catches three passes from Maye Douglas recorded three receptions on four targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders.
Impact Douglas played exclusively in three-receiver sets, but he was still among the snap leaders for the Patriots in their first several offensive possessions as he worked primarily alongside Tyquan Thornton and K.J. Osborn. His longest catch of the day came on a third down midway through the first quarter that went for 16 yards and was delivered by Drake Maye. More importantly, Douglas looks to be the starting slot receiver for the Patriots heading into a Week 1 matchup against the Bengals.

Antonio Gibson - Closes preseason with four touches Gibson carried the ball three times for 17 yards in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders. He added one reception on two targets for 13 yards.
Impact Gibson was the first back in the game for the Patriots with Rhamondre Stevenson sitting out. He played only offensive drive with Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) under center and got touches on four of the first five offensive plays. Gibson will enter the regular season as the second back on the depth chart, and he should get plenty of work in obvious passing situations while occasionally spelling Stevenson on the ground.

Drake Maye - Makes case to take starting job Maye completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders. He added three rushes for 17 yards.
Impact Maye followed Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) into the game but took over on the second offensive drive. He got off to a shaky start with two aborted snaps in his first six plays, but he settled in and made a number of impressive throws. His longest completion of the day came on a 29-yard completion across the middle of the field to Ja'Lynn Polk. More importantly, Maye showed command of the pocket, escaping pressure when needed while also making some throws on the run -- two of which were negated be penalties. This performance ends an impressive initial preseason during which Maye has made his case to start Week 1 against the Bengals, though Brissett is still likely the favorite if he proves to be healthy.

Impact The 25-year-old was ruled out in the second half. Elliss was claimed off waivers from the Eagles late last season and appeared in a combined 16 games for Philly and New England. He has 23 games of experience under his belt and is in line to handle a special teams role for the Patriots should he make the roster.

Impact Sow went down in the second quarter. There should be more info on the second-year guard's injury in the coming days, but Sow would be difficult to replace on a New England offensive line that has been working all summer to find the right combination with which to head into Week 1.
