Could require Tommy John surgery Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Mullens may need Tommy John surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact The 25-year-old quarterback has been ruled out for the season, and C.J. Beathard will take over under center. Mullens is still being evaluated, but if he needs Tommy John surgery, there's a chance he may be sidelined to begin the 2021 campaign as well.

Impact Mullens isn't expected to be available for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, and there's a good chance that he's done for the season. Moving forward, C.J. Beathard is in line to be the 49ers' starting quarterback, although the team opened Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will return to practice this week and is eligible to play Saturday. If Mullens' season is over, he'll finish with 2,437 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Suffers late injury Mullens appeared to suffer an elbow injury late Sunday's 41-33 loss to the Cowboys, leading to his exit from the contest, according to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Impact Mullens completed 21 of 36 attempts for 219 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions before suffering the injury on the first play of his team's final drive, which finished in a Hail Mary touchdown thrown by C.J. Beathard. He will likely undergo testing to determine the severity of the injury in the coming hours, but with the 49ers' record now sitting at 5-9, it wouldn't be surprising if Beathard ends up starting next Saturday's matchup with the Cardinals.

Impact Mullens struggled against the Washington pass rush as he set season lows in completion percentage (56 percent) and yards per attempt (5.8). He threw a pick-six on the last drive of the third quarter but came right back and capped off a 75-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk. Mullen has topped 250 passing yards in four of the last five games, but he's also posted a 6:7 TD:INT during that span and will look to get back on track against a vulnerable Cowboys defense next Sunday.
