2024 Best NFL linebackers: Fred Warner, Roquan Smith lead top 10 rankings
Isaiah Simmons - Listed as CB on initial depth chartSimmons is listed as the No. 2 nickel corner on the Giants' first unofficial depth chart, Dan Salomone of the team's official site reports.
ImpactThough the depth chart is subject to change during the preseason, Simmons' initial listing seems to confirm that he is switching positions after he worked as a linebacker last year. The Clemson product's versatility has always been one of his strongest traits, and he has plenty of experience in the defensive backfield having played nearly half of his defensive snaps at corner or safety for Arizona in 2022. Rookie third-round pick Andru Phillips is listed as the No. 1 option at nickel corner on New York's first depth chart, but even if that holds true, Simmons should see the field fairly often and could bounce between the nickel-corner position and linebacker.

Connor Galvin - Out for seasonGalvin suffered a torn MCL in Thursday's preseason loss against the Giants and will require season-ending surgery, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ImpactThe second-year offensive tackle was carted off into the locker room during Detroit's preseason opener. He'll now have to focus on next season after making one appearance for the Lions last season with seven special-teams snaps.

Drew Lock - To miss time, won't need surgeryLock (hip) is expected to miss time due to a bone contusion and strained oblique suffered during Thursday's preseason game against the Lions, but he will not require surgery, Ian R...
ImpactCoach Brian Daboll said the Giants could add another quarterback with Lock injured. Though Daboll declined to offer a true estimate of Lock's recovery timetable, per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports, he did say "it could be longer than a couple days." Tommy DeVito figures to step up and handle the bulk of second-team reps at practice as long as Lock is unable to go. It's possible, depending on the extent of Lock's absence and whether DeVito is able to impress with more opportunities on deck, that a competition for the No. 2 spot behind starter Daniel Jones could materialize.

Dante Miller - Impressive in preseason openerMiller tallied 63 yards on 12 carries and caught both of his passing targets for seven yards in a preseason win against Detroit on Thursday.
ImpactMiller led Giants running backs with 26 offensive snaps in the exhibition contest. That doesn't indicate his place on the depth chart -- in fact, it more likely suggests that he's near the bottom of the pecking order -- but the 25-year-old nonetheless took advantage of the opportunity, leading New York with 63 rushing yards on a healthy 5.3 YPC. Miller impressively ended the third quarter with a nine-yard rush after the Giants had been pinned back at their own four-yard line, and he added a 19-yard carry two plays into the fourth. While Devin Singletary is secure in his starting RB role and both Tyrone Tracy and Eric Gray looked good as the most likely No. 2 and No. 3 options Thursday, Miller could certainly carve out a role for New York this season and give himself a chance to rise up the depth chart with continued strong play.

Sam LaPorta - Sits out preseason openerLaPorta (hamstring) didn't see action in Thursday's preseason opener against the Giants, the Detroit News reports.
ImpactThe Lions opted not to play their key skill players in the contest, but LaPorta has been dealing with a hamstring injury, so he probably wouldn't have played Thursday even if they had. The star tight end's next chance to see game action is Aug. 17 against the Chiefs, but he'll need to get some practice time in before then for that to occur.
