Jaguars sign veteran safety Tashaun Gipson despite a 6-game suspension to start the regular season

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson to a one-year contract despite a six-game suspension to start the regular season
AUGUST 11•ASSOCIATED PRESS
Tashaun Gipson Sr. - Returning to JacksonvilleThe Jaguars are slated to sign Gipson (suspension) to a one-year deal, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ImpactGipson played with Jacksonville from 2016 to 2018 before bouncing between Houston, Chicago and San Francisco in subsequent campaigns. The veteran safety was a starter for the 49ers last season, and he finished the regular season with 60 tackles (41 solo), including one sack, and one interception over 16 contests. Gipson also logged every defensive snap for San Francisco in each of the team's three playoff games. However, in July he was suspended by the league for six games due to a violation of the NFL's performance enhancing substances policy. Gipson will be able to participate in Jacksonville's exhibition contests, but he won't be eligible to play until the team's seventh regular-season game due to the suspension.

ImpactPrince was the third running back to record a touch after Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire had finished their work for the night. The second-year Tulsa product currently slots in as the No. 3 running back on the preseason depth chart, but he'll have to hold off the more experienced Keaontay Ingram for that role over the remaining two preseason games.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Limited action in preseason openerEdwards-Helaire rushed twice for no gain and wasn't targeted in the Chiefs' 26-13 preseason loss to the Jaguars on Saturday night.
ImpactThe fifth-year pro was the second back to log a carry after Isiah Pacheco helmed the ground attack on the Chiefs' opening drive. The backfield pecking order Saturday mirrors the one Kansas City is expected to start the regular season with, one Edwards-Helaire logged a modest 87 touches in across 15 regular-season games in 2023.

Brian Thomas Jr. - Chunk play on one catch SaturdayThomas secured one of two targets for 41 yards in the Jaguars' 26-13 preseason win over the Chiefs on Saturday night.
ImpactOne play after his first target from C.J. Beathard fell incomplete, Thomas and the journeyman signal-caller connected on a 41-yard completion down the left side late in the first quarter. It was an auspicious start to the rookie first-round pick's on-field NFL career, and the play offered a glimpse of the talent that could enable Thomas to eventually make a push for the Jaguars' No. 2 receiver job.
