Pierce hopes to name Raiders starting quarterback after preseason game against the Cowboys

The Raiders’ quarterback battle Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew has been even

Aidan O'Connell - Las Vegas nearing QB1 decisionRaiders coach Antonio Pierce said Sunday that he plans to name a starting quarterback between O'Connell and Gardner Minshew after Saturday's preseason game versus Dallas, Paul Guti...
ImpactPierce also said that O'Connell and Minshew are both slated to play at least one quarter during this exhibition with the Cowboys, which is in line with the playing time that they got during Saturday's 24-23 loss to Minnesota. O'Connell did ultimately start versus the Vikings, but he's been splitting first-team practice reps throughout training camp and appears to be on even footing with Minshew following this preseason opener. O'Connell was solid during his 11 regular-season appearances as a rookie last year, and he completed seven of nine passing attempts for 76 yards during his lone offensive series against Minnesota. He'll also have a chance to separate himself during a week of practices before getting to Saturday's game against Dallas.

Gardner Minshew II - Starting battle nearing conclusionRaiders coach Antonio Pierce said Sunday that he expects to name a starting quarterback between Minshew and Aidan O'Connell following Saturday's preseason game against Dallas, Paul...
ImpactPierce said that Minshew and O'Connell will once again play at least one quarter during the upcoming preseason game with Dallas. The two signal-callers have been splitting first-team practice reps throughtout training camp, and, while O'Connell ultimately got the start during last Saturday's 24-23 loss to Minnesota, both quarterbacks saw relatively equal playing time and neither appeared to separate themselves with their performances during the preseason opener. With this competition seemingly in a dead heat up to this point, it's likely that how Minshew and O'Connell perform against the Cowboys and during upcoming practices could weigh rather significantly in this final decision.

Jackson Powers-Johnson - Almost ready to returnPowers-Johnson (undisclosed) might be ready to return from the active/PUP list next week, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
ImpactThe offensive guard was placed on the active/PUP list July 23. A second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Powers-Johnson looks primed for a starting role once he returns.

Kolton Miller - Might return next weekMiller (shoulder) might be ready to return from the active/PUP list after the Raiders' preseason game next Saturday against the Cowboys, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
ImpactThe left tackle suffered a shoulder injury near the end of last season and began training camp on the active/PUP list. The 2018 first-round pick has started 90 games for the Raiders in his career. Miller is again listed as Las Vegas' starting left tackle going into 2024.

Byron Murphy Jr. - Plays one series in preseason openerMurphy (knee) had one tackle and played just one drive in Saturday's preseason win over Las Vegas.
ImpactMurphy is coming back from a Grade 3 MCL sprain suffered in Week 15 last season. It's a good sign he's playing this early in the preseason even if being eased back into action. If at full speed, he'll be counted on as the team's top corner.

Tre Tucker - Big gains SaturdayTucker caught two of four targets for 73 yards in Saturday's 24-23 preseason loss to the Vikings. He also added 23 yards on one punt return.
ImpactDavante Adams got the night off, leaving Jakobi Meyers and Tucker as the Raiders' starting wideouts, and the latter wound up leading the team in receiving yards thanks to gains of 29 and 44 yards on successive second-quarter touchdown drives with Gardner Minshew under center. Tucker has drawn plenty of praise from the coaching staff in camp, and the 2023 third-round pick could be headed for a breakout campaign if he can earn enough volume in a passing game that also has to find targets for tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer.
