Recovering from core muscle surgery Cobb underwent core muscle surgery last week with the hope he'll recover in time for the postseason, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Cobb exited the Packers' last game Week 12 against the Rams with what was termed a groin issue. With the benefit of a bye, the Packers weren't required to disclose any details of the injury until this week, but coach Matt LaFleur touched on Cobb on Thursday, stating the veteran wide receiver "is going to be out for awhile. He had a pretty significant injury." Cobb seems poised to land on injured reserve in due time, but the team may wait to make the transaction official until he's well into his rehab, considering the 21-day practice window aspect once the team designates him for return.

Impact Even with the benefit of a Week 13 bye, Cobb doesn't seem to have made much progress in his recovery from what LaFleur termed as a "pretty significant" injury. Cobb hasn't resumed practicing and looks like he can safely be ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bears, and his status beyond Week 14 looks murky as well. However long Cobb is sidelined, more reps should be available for Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling alongside No. 1 wideout Davante Adams.

He caught four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown in the first half of that contest, while his absence in the second half left more snaps available for Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Allen Lazard. Given the Packers' reliance on three or four-receiver sets since top tight end went down with a Robert Tonyan season-ending knee injury, a potential Cobb absence for Sunday's game against Chicago would all but ensure hefty snaps counts for both Valdes-Scantling and Lazard.

Impact Cobb moved up a notch in the pecking order for Week 11 with fellow wideout Allen Lazard (shoulder) sidelined, and he was on the field for a season-high 76 percent of the plays run by the Packers' offense. However, his opportunities to contribute were minimal, as he drew just two of the Packers' 31 targets on the day. Cobb played at least 62.3 percent of the snaps in four of the Packers' five games and scored twice -- with both coming in the same game -- during that span, but he also averaged just 2.6 receptions and 24.6 yards per contest.

Cobb is dependent on slot snaps and, particularly with Valdes-Scantling back from injury, that leaves Cobb in contention with Lazard for snaps. There's a spot for each of Cobb, Lazard and Valdes-Scantling in the Green Bay offense, but for fantasy investors it's more difficult to make room in the starting lineup for a secondary receiver like Cobb.

Impact Cobb's box score was mostly propelled by a 35-yard reception on a somewhat improvised throw from Jordan Love, which marked the longest play of the day for the Packers offense. It was encouraging to see Cobb show that in-play adjustment ability much like he does with starter Aaron Rodgers (COVID-19), yet the five targets on 34 pass attempts is a reminder that Cobb's role is that of a glue guy rather than a featured component of the Green Bay offense. It's not clear whether the Packers will get Rodgers back for a home game against Seattle in Week 10.

Impact The veteran slot man was filling the role of de facto No. 1 receiver for Aaron Rodgers on Thursday, and although he couldn't do much in the yardage department, he delivered for fantasy managers with touchdown grabs of two and six yards in the second half. Cobb hadn't been in the end zone since Week 4, when he'd recorded his first two scores of the campaign versus the Steelers. Cobb now has back-to-back three-catch efforts, but his role could diminish in a Week 9 road battle against the Chiefs a week from Sunday if both Davante Adams and Allen Lazard clear COVID-19 protocols in time for that contest, as expected, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring) is activated from injured reserve.
