Impact Shaheed is dealing with a new toe/foot injury, per Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. After missing the Saints' preseason opener last week due to a hamstring issue, Shaheed's status now looks uncertain for Sunday's exhibition contest against San Francisco. On a positive note for New Orleans, A.T. Perry (ankle) returned as a limited participant Friday.

Impact Shaheed missed New Orleans' preseason opener due to a hamstring injury sustained Aug. 3, but it looks like he's now back to full health. That positions him to suit up for Sunday's road exhibition contest against the 49ers, assuming the Saints' starters take the field. Shaheed is primed for a key role on offense this season, both as New Orleans' primary punt and kick returner, and as the No. 2 receiver behind Chris Olave.

Tuesday's development marks the his first visible on-field activity in the meantime, but he likely will need to ditch the non-contact jersey entirely in order to gain clearance for game action, which could come as early as this Sunday in San Francisco.

Impact Head coach Dennis Allen didn't seem overly concerned about the injury, which was characterized as hamstring tightness, saying that the team hopes to get Shaheed back on the field Sunday. The wideout is slated to be an important player for the Saints during the coming season, as he's expected to again work as the team's lead kick and punt returner in addition to functioning as the No. 2 receiver.

Impact Shaheed earned the extension partly due to his work as a punt returner after he garnered his first career All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections as a special-teamer last season. The 25-year-old also showed growth as a wide receiver, finishing with 46 catches for 719 yards and five touchdowns over 15 regular-season contests, eight of which he started. Shahid should get the opportunity to further develop in that role during the upcoming campaign, as he's slated to work as the Saints No. 2 receiving option behind Chris Olave (shoulder).
