Will split first-team reps Ehlinger is in line to continue to share first-team QB reps with Jacob Eason, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.

Impact With regard to the decision to split the team's top signal-caller reps, coach Frank Reich noted Tuesday that "it wasn't (Eason) doing anything wrong. This is a meritocracy and (Ehlinger) has looked good so we decided to split it up. The good news is they both looked sharp today. We'll continue to split those reps." Though it appears as though the two QBs will have an opportunity compete going forward, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin relays that Eason is still expected to start Sunday's preseason opener against the Panthers and see first-team work in that contest. In any case, this is a situation worth monitoring, given that No. 1 QB Carson Wentz (foot) is a candidate to miss time early on this season.

Impact Ehlinger hadn't handled any first-team reps until Tuesday, when he was given the opportunity to split starting work with Jacob Eason. Coach Frank Reich praised the rookie sixth-round pick's consistency while running the second-team offense earlier in camp, and with Carson Wentz set to miss 5-12 weeks after undergoing foot surgery, the Week 1 starting gig looks by all accounts like a legitimate competition. The Colts could opt to give both Ehlinger and Eason substantial opportunities during Sunday's preseason matchup against the Panthers.

Impact Ehlinger has drawn raves from coaches and reporters with his poise and consistency in running the second-team offense in training camp, while Eason has been inconsistent and often is seen struggling with the first-teamers. Eason is seen as having a stronger arm, but Ehlinger has more mobility and can extend plays with his running ability. With Carson Wentz out 5-12 weeks after foot surgery, it's not out of the question that Ehlinger could get a chance to play if Eason struggles and the team doesn't add a veteran quarterback. Indy's preseason games are certainly worth monitoring as both Eason and Ehlinger should get meaningful playing time, and their performance could impact the quarterback competition.
