The 29-year-old wideout is facing clear opportunity to earn a starting role in Green Bay's offense this season, so it would be encouraging to see him return without missing much time. Impact Gutekunst seemed to say Watkins is expected back before rookie wideout Christian Watson, who was placed on the PUP list after suffering an injury during OTAs. Watkins' spot on the NFI list suggests he was hurt while away from the team, but it doesn't sound like anything serious. He does have a sketchy medical record, with multiple missed games in all but two of his eight NFL seasons. Watkins has played 99 of a possible 129 regular-season games (76.7 percent) since entering the NFL as the fourth overall pick in 2014. He has a nice opportunity to earn snaps in Green Bay this year, but the 29-year-old hasn't reached 500 yards since 2019 and hasn't gone over 700 since 2015.

Impact In their attempt to navigate life without Davante Adams, the Packers' most notable splash among veteran options at wide receiver this offseason was Watkins. Watkins got some run with Aaron Rodgers and the first-team offense during mandatory minicamp in June, but his first practice of training camp will be delayed until he gains medical clearance to get on the field. Watkins has played only one full season as a pro back in his rookie 2014 campaign with the Bills, missing a combined 30 games over the last seven years.

Impact Head coach Matt LaFleur mentioned Tuesday that Watkins was present for two of Green Bay's OTA sessions last week, but he didn't participate during the practices open to reporters. This week's minicamp will represent the first time he'll get to practice with reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers. Watkins signed a one-year deal this offseason to help mitigate the losses of Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, but he'll face competition from returning depth pieces Malik Taylor and Juwann Winfree and rookies Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure for snaps and targets.
