Joins Saquon Barkley on IR The Giants placed Shepard (toe) on injured reserve Wednesday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.
Impact Shepard becomes the second Giants skill-position player to head to IR in the last two days, joining running back Saquon Barkley (knee), who will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Fortunately for Shepard, his bout with turf toe isn't nearly as dire, but he'll be forced to miss at least three games as a result of the injury. While Shepard is on the mend, Damion Ratley and C.J. Board will see added opportunities in three-receiver sets alongside starters Darius Slayton and Golden Tate, both of whom could also benefit from a slight uptick in targets.

Unlikely to play Week 3 The Giants don't anticipate Shepard (toe) being available to play in Sunday's game against the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact Shepard exited the Giants' Week 2 loss to the Bears due to a suspected case of turf toe, playing just 15 first-half snaps before heading to the locker room. Though the Giants haven't commented on the severity of his injury, the team apparently doesn't have much early optimism that Shepard will be able to rally for Sunday's game. New York will presumably wait and see what Shepard can do in practices Wednesday through Friday before making an official call on his status, but if he's sidelined against San Francisco, C.J. Board would likely step into a starting role at receiver alongside Darius Slayton and Golden Tate.

Impact Shepard will have an MRI on Monday to officially determine the nature of his injury. Turf toe injuries can carry a variety of recovery timeframes depending on severity, with a Grade 2 issue usually ranging from several days up to a few weeks. In the event that Shepard's injury is significant enough that he's forced to miss any time, Damion Ratley and C.J. Board stand to see increased reps behind top wideouts Darius Slayton and Golden Tate.

Ruled out Sunday Shepard won't return to Sunday's contest in Chicago due to a toe injury, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Impact Shepard got hurt late in the first half, limping to the sideline and reaching at his left foot before limping to the locker room, per Leonard. After attempting to run a route on the Giants' first play of the third quarter, Shepard again made a visit to the locker room, and the team ruled him out a short time later. He'll end Week 2 with two receptions (on four targets) for 29 yards and one six-yard carry. With Shepard out, the Giants will turn to Darius Slayton, Golden Tate, Damion Ratley and C.J. Board to handle WR reps.

Impact Shepard hauled in everything thrown his way besides an unsuccessful two-point conversion, but his production was limited to underneath routes for modest gains. In contrast, second-year wideout Darius Slayton again emerged as New York's top deep threat, catching six of nine targets for 102 yards and two scores. Although having Golden Tate sidelined Monday adds another factor to consider, Shepard's stock could still benefit from more vertical looks. In absence of those, he'll remain of most value in PPR leagues that reward his craftiness in getting open on intermediate grabs.

Impact Each of the three is a viable candidate to lead the team in targets, and the same can probably be said of tight end Evan Engram or even running back Saquon Barkley. Health has arguably become the biggest problem for Shepard, who has played 53 of a possible 64 games in his NFL career but does come with a worrisome history of migraines and concussions. There's also been some question about his effectiveness playing outside rather than the slot, though he seems to draw targets whenever he's on the field, averaging at least 4.1 catches per game in each of his four seasons with the Giants. Given the sturdy competition for targets, a big season from Shepard probably requires QB Daniel Jones taking a sizable step forward in his first year under head coach Joe Judge and OC Jason Garrett.
