Chase Edmonds - Gets chance in Tampa Bay The Buccaneers are signing Edmonds to a one-year contract Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact Edmonds is coming off a disappointing 2022 campaign, having suited up for eight games with the Dolphins and five games with the Broncos, but with just 245 rushing yards and two touchdowns (3.6 YPC) plus 16 catches for 157 yards and a receiving score. The 26-year-old did look better down the stretch in Denver, and from 2019-21 with Arizona he was one of the most efficient running back's in the NFL, so he's could be worth monitoring in his new landing spot. With the Buccaneers having released Leonard Fournette, Rachaad White currently stands as Edmonds' primary competition for touches.

Lavonte David - Staying with Tampa Davis agreed Wednesday with the Buccaneers on a one-year deal, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
Impact The 33-year-old linebacker started all 17 games last season, finishing with his most tackles (124) since 2015 and his most sacks (three) since 2018. Pro Football Focus even graded David third among off-ball linebackers (85.1 score), though teammate Devin White had better IDP numbers while grading out 74th of 81 qualifiers (43.7). Both are viable candidates to lead the Bucs in tackles in 2013, but White's superior speed and pass rushing makes him the more attractive IDP option even if he's not quite as reliable from snap to snap as Tampa Bay's elder statesman in the linebacking corps.

Baker Mayfield - Finds work in Tampa Mayfield agreed Wednesday with the Buccaneers on a one-year contract worth a maximum of $8.5 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact The initial reports don't specify the base value, guarantees or incentives in the deal, but whatever the case, Mayfield is expected to have a chance to compete for the starting job given Tampa Bay's lack of cap space and premium draft picks. The other candidate for that role, as of now, is 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask, who has nine career pass attempts to his name. Mayfield played somewhat better for the Rams late last season after struggling in Carolina during the first half of the campaign, but there's a large body of evidence suggesting he's no better than a bottom-end starter or high-end backup. The soon-to-be 28-year-old at least will have talented pass catchers in Tampa, unless the Bucs end up moving Chris Godwin or Mike Evans.

Impact Dean was selected by the Buccaneers in the third round of the 2019 Draft and quickly carved out a sizable role in Tampa Bay's secondary. Across his first four NFL seasons, he's totaled 197 tackles, 41 pass defenses, seven interceptions and one defensive touchdown, but he's missed at least one game due to injury in each of those campaigns. With his new contract with the team, Dean figures to remain a prominent member of the Buccaneers' defense for years to come.

Impact General manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles unsurprisingly gave Trask public votes of confidence when speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine last week, but the largely unproven 2021 second-round pick has some hurdles to clear in his bid to succeed Tom Brady as the Buccaneers' starting signal-caller. Stroud points out that Trask will not only be tasked with learning a new offense, but will also be working with a first-time play-caller in new offensive coordinator Dave Canales as well as a rookie position coach in Thad Lewis. Additionally, a young but experienced veteran such as Drew Lock or Baker Mayfield is likely to eventually be added to the quarterback room, which could be a challenge Trask isn't ready to overcome.
