Impact The Saints' new coaching staff doesn't appear as intrigued with Hill's potential as a dual-threat quarterback as Sean Payton once was. This offseason, it appears that Hill will return to a familiar gadget role that primarily involves taking snaps as a tight end. Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Advocate recently reported that Hill, who is recovering from left foot surgery to address a Lisfranc injury, was never in the mix for the starting quarterback gig this offseason, and the team has since re-signed Jameis Winston (knee). What remains to be seen is whether Hill could still operate as a backup quarterback, or if his time under center has run its course entirely for New Orleans.

Impact Given the 6-to-9-month timeline to recover from his Lisfranc injury, Hill was not certain to be ready for the start of the 2022 campaign anyway. However, with Sean Payton now retired, it appears the Payton-led Hill experiment may be over regardless. Not only did New Orleans find limited success with Hill as a starter, he could hardly hold up to increased usage in a part-time role given the laundry list of injuries he dealt with last season. Instead, it seems that Hill will go back to being used as the position-flexible gadget player we've seen before thanks to the return of offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. Meanwhile, the Saints likely will explore different options for their starting signal-caller, including a possible reunion with Jameis Winston (knee).

Long recovery on tap Hill is expected to need six -to-nine months of recovery following surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury in his left foot, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports.
Impact It's important to note the Saints have not officially announced a recovery timeline, but given the nature of previous Lisfranc injuries, the aforementioned timeframe is a fair guess. Hill will undergo two separate surgeries this offseason in order to repair the injury with the latter likely occurring sometime after the 2022 NFL Draft. The 31-year-old dual-threat quarterback did start the year behind Jameis Winston, but after the 2015 No. 1 overall pick tore his ACL in Week 8, Hill eventually took over as the starter. Provided the Saints bring back Winston, who is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, expect the duo to once again compete for the starting honors to begin the 2022 season.

Impact Hill exited in Sunday's season-ending win over Atlanta and will undergo surgery to repair the issue, followed by a second procedure later in the offseason to remove the hardware from his foot. Head coach Sean Payton said Monday that he didn't yet have a timetable for the quarterback's recovery. The 31-year-old completed 78 of 134 passes for 978 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing 70 times for 374 yards and five touchdowns across 12 appearances in 2021, and he finished the season as the team's starter. He was rewarded with a four-year extension in November, but Payton declined to reveal the team's plans at quarterback in 2022 during Monday's press conference.
