With the Saints in the midst of a four-game losing streak, Payton is preparing Hill to take over as the No. 1, and he responded with back-to-back full listings on New Orleans injury reports Monday and Tuesday. If Payton upholds Tuesday's statement, he'll officially make a decision on Hill as the team's starter at some point Wednesday.

The starting assignment is likely contingent on Hill demonstrating that his lingering plantar fascia injury isn't a concern, and he appears to have done just that by taking every rep with the first-team offense Monday. So long as Hill avoids any further setbacks over the next two days of practice, expect Payton to officially name him the starter leading up to Thursday's contest. Over his four-game starting run in place of Drew Brees in 2020, Hill proved to be a fantasy-friendly option. He averaged 208.5 passing yards and 52.3 rushing yards while accounting for eight touchdowns (four passing, four rushing) during that stretch.

Impact Hill's absence was certainly pronounced as Trevor Siemian struggled mightily to lead a functioning offense. The gadget quarterback was a full participant in practice all week so it's a little surprising the Saints didn't feel comfortable using Hill, especially as the offense floundered. The newly extended quarterback won't have much time to rehab the injury with the Saints slated to take on the Cowboys next Thursday.

If he continues to serve in his current hybrid role on offense while also contributing on special teams, he'll earn around $10 million annually, while he would reach the upper range of the extension if he eventually emerges as the team's starting quarterback at any point in the next four seasons. Given that he was beaten out by Jameis Winston for the starting role in the preseason and has backed up journeyman Trevor Siemian in the last three games following Winston's season-ending injury, Hill seems more likely to remain in his current gadget role.
