Return window officially opens The 49ers designated Coleman (knee) to return from injured reserve Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Coleman is now eligible to resume practicing without counting against the 53-man roster. The 49ers will have 21 days to decide whether to add Coleman back to the roster or to stash him on IR for the remainder of the season. With Jeff Wilson (ankle) also expected to join Raheem Mostert on IR this week, Coleman will join a backfield currently consisting of Jerick McKinnon and JaMycal Hasty once he's fully cleared. If Coleman is able to return in time for Sunday's game in Seattle, he could have the immediate opportunity to handle a key role.

Impact Running backs continue to drop like flies in San Francisco, with Jeff Wilson the most recent member expected to be placed on injured reserve due to a high-ankle sprain. Raheem Mostert also resides on IR due to a similar injury, while Coleman appears to be closing in on the end of his recovery from a sprained knee. The 49ers will reconvene on the field Wednesday, at which point Coleman will have three chances to open his 21-day window for the 49ers to activate him. If Coleman indeed comes of the list and is available Sunday at Seattle, he'll team up with Jerick McKinnon and JaMycal Hasty out of the backfield. Otherwise, the aforementioned pair are the two healthy San Fran RBs on the active roster.

Impact It's not entirely surprising to see Coleman wind up on injured reserve given his expected timeline for return could be potentially in the month-long range, and it's certainly longer than injured teammate Raheem Mostert (knee). JaMycal Hasty was called up from the practice squad to provide depth at running back, but it certainly looks as if Sunday's matchup against the Giants will feature plenty of Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson, particularly with backup QB Nick Mullens set to lead the offense in the absence of Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle).
