Impact Boyle made his second and third starts of the season in losses to the Falcons and Seahawks in Weeks 16 and 17, respectively, after Goff missed both games, first due to a positive COVID-19 test and then due to a strained knee. Since Goff wasn't able to practice in any fashion last week on account of the injury, he may need to upgrade to full activity by Friday for the Lions to feel confident enough with his health to reinsert him into the lineup for a largely meaningless Week 18 game. If not, Boyle will be prepared to face his former team for the first time, though the "revenge game" narrative probably won't be enough to make the 27-year-old a reliable fantasy option. Through his first three starts, Boyle has averaged 175.3 passing yards, 4.6 rushing yards, 1.0 passing touchdowns and 2.0 interceptions per game.

Impact Boyle didn't do much until Detroit was down 38-7 minutes into the third quarter, which the Eastern Kentucky product had opened with an interception on the first offensive play. While Boyle was subsequently able to pad his stats with a couple of touchdowns to Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Taylor Decker, the Lions were never really in the game thanks to a terrible defensive showing that admittedly would be hard for any quarterback to overcome. That Detroit never turned to David Blough at any point suggests Boyle will remain under center in Week 18 against Green Bay if Jared Goff (knee) is still unable to play, but we'd expect his production to be more similar to Week 16 against the Falcons (187 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception) than what Boyle was able to put up in garbage time against the Seahawks, who were decimated by injuries and COVID-related absences by the time Boyle made any noise.

Impact While Goff was on the reserve/COVID-19 list last week after testing positive for the virus, Boyle picked up his second start of the season and of his career. Boyle fared far better last week in the Lions' 20-16 loss to Atlanta than he did in his Detroit debut Week 11 in Cleveland, completing 24 of his first 33 attempts for 187 yards and a touchdown before throwing a game-ending interception at the goal line in the final minute. Though Goff was restored from the list Monday and was expected to take back the reins of the Detroit offense this week, he was unable to practice Wednesday through Friday while he remained troubled by the knee injury he suffered late in the first half of the Lions' Week 15 win over Arizona. Boyle was thus able to take all the first-team reps in practice to keep himself prepared for the assignment, but he may have to make do without his starting tight end (Brock Wright) and two starting receivers (Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond). All three pass catchers were placed on the COVID-19 list between Monday and Thursday and aren't guaranteed to be cleared prior to Sunday's game.

Impact Detroit has yet to officially add Goff back to the 53-man roster, but that transaction is merely a formality now that the signal-caller has been cleared to report back to the Lions' team facility. While Goff was unable to practice this past week before he was deactivated in advance of Sunday's game against the Falcons, Boyle stepped in for his second start of the season. After a wretched showing in his Lions debut Week 11 in Cleveland, Boyle was far more competent in directing the offense in Atlanta. He completed 24 of 34 attempts for 187 yards and a touchdown, though he threw a game-sealing pick in the red zone to send Detroit to a 20-16 loss. Boyle's performance was probably enough to keep him ahead of David Blough as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart for the final two games of the season.

However, that's not saying much, and the game ended on a sour note after Boyle blew Detroit's comeback attempt by throwing a pick near Atlanta's goal line in the closing minutes of regulation. While it's not clear if Jared Goff (COVID-19) will gain medical clearance in the coming week, Boyle will remain far off the fantasy radar when Detroit travels to Seattle in Week 17.

Impact Goff was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list last Monday and was unable to clear league protocols in time to suit up Week 16. His absence will give Boyle his second NFL start. The first one didn't exactly go swimmingly back in Week 11, when he was 15-for-23 passing for 77 yards and two interceptions in a 13-10 loss at Cleveland. At the very least, Boyle has capable running backs in the stable, with Jamaal Williams and Craig Reynolds on hand to ease the burden (D'Andre Swift again is out with an AC joint sprain).
